Reason 29: Swayambhunath Stupa – ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ (‘Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus’)

The Swayambhunath stupa is one of those gems that crowns the magnificence of Kathmandu’s ancient architecture. This is a perfectly proportioned monument with the piercing eyes that seem to be constantly reminding the inhabitants of the ancient valley to: ‘Hear no evil, See no evil, and Speak no evil’’. The 13-tiered, beehive like formation at the top represents the 13 stages that humans must pass through to achieve nirvana.

Reason 26: Pashupatinath Temple – A Mecca for Hinduism

Nepal’s most revered Hindu temple stands on the banks of the holy Bagmati River, a stream that runs throughout the ancient valley. The temple is swarmed by a bustling market of religious stalls selling marigolds, prasad (offerings), incense, rudraksha beads, conch shells, pictures of Hindu deities and temples etc. Sadhus and devotees of Shiva flock to Pashupatinath from across the subcontinent and many Nepalese choose to be cremated on the banks of the holy river which is even used by the kings of Nepal. Non Hindus are not allowed into the main vicinity of the temple.

Reason 24: Kathmandu – At One Time the Ultimate Destination for Peace and Quiet

The famous singer Bob Seger wrote a song called ‘Kathmandu’ in the hippy days of 1975. He wrote it at a time when he wanted to disappear from the record business, media and touring, which he got tired off. But Kathmandu represented a far way land where no one would be able to find you, he sung, and this is why Kathmandu became a famous craze at that time…& still is!! Nepal’s bustling capital is an epicenter of trade, tourism and history. The city is loaded with world heritage sites. This old city is a virtual launching point for international visitors; Kathmandu is a handicrafts haven, hippy hangout, travelers’ haul up point and artistic enclave all wrapped up in one.
