It is the tallest and biggest mountain on earth, as far removed from sea level as it's possible to be--and yet its sedimentary layers contain fossils that were once creatures that lived on the ocean seabed.

Carlos Soria Heads to Manaslu at 86: “To Climb, You Have to Go

At 86 years old, Spanish mountaineer Carlos Soria is once again proving that age is no barrier to chasing dreams. He has set out for Manaslu (8,163 m) in Nepal, one of the world’s highest mountains, with the same determination that has defined his long career.

This climb is especially meaningful—it marks the 50th anniversary of the first Spanish ascent of Manaslu in 1975, an expedition in which Soria himself took part, though he didn’t reach the summit back then. Now, half a century later, he wants to close that unfinished chapter.

Despite facing challenges such as a knee prosthesis and the lingering effects of a serious leg injury on Dhaulagiri, Soria shows no sign of slowing down. His philosophy is clear: “To climb, you have to go.” For him, it’s not about waiting for the perfect moment, but about taking the step and facing the mountain.

Soria’s plan is to acclimatize first in the Khumbu region, climbing up to 6,000 meters, before moving to Manaslu’s base camp in mid-September. From there, he and his team will prepare for a summit push.

More than a sporting challenge, this expedition is about honoring history and keeping a spirit alive. With his courage and perseverance, Carlos Soria continues to inspire climbers and dreamers around the world—showing that passion knows no age.
