Gorkha Durbar NepalGorkha is a picturesque hill- town that has a rich history of its own. The place is situated on a small mountain at the height of 3500 feet and offers a magnificent view of the Himalayan Peaks. King Prithvi Narayan Shah, who unified the Kingdom of Nepal during eighteenth century and got an upper hand over the Ranas, was born here. Actually king Drabya Shah founded this kingdom in the year 1560 and since then, the place has acted as the den for the Shah dynasty. In the war of throne with Ranas, the Gorkhas had the last laugh as the Gorkha soldiers succeeded in conquering the Kathmandu valley. The capital of the Nepal was shifted to Kathmandu since then. But this beautiful township has always remained as the center of attraction for many Nepalese as well as foreign visitors.

Around Dhaulagiri Trek
A magnificent route around the world’s 7th highest mountain, this trek is overlooked by many, but amply rewards the few who chose it. Although the route is difficult and remote, adventurous souls will delight in the unparalleled wilderness and beauty. However, it is not for the faint of heart, as there are two demanding passes to be crossed: French Pass and Dhampus Pass and several nights are spent above 4000m.

In order to ensure that there are no problems with the altitude, the trek includes sufficient rest days so that everyone will be well acclimatized. It is best to allow extra time for this trek in case additional acclimatization days are required. The beauty of the high camps is such that it is well worth taking the eno complains about spending the extra days on the trek.

There are three alternatives for finishing the trek; the one you select will depend on the time and energy remaining. For a complete switch of scenery, it is possible to trek north to the holy town of Muktinah, and from there retrace your steps to Jomsom, It is also possible to join with the Annapurna circuit heading south and finishing several days later at NayaPul. The third choice, flying out of Jomsom, is the shortest and easiest and is described here.

Here's the great and beautiful mountain I walked for miles to see, over ridges and valleys of 3,000 feet per day, up and down, 6 or 7 hours a day - the majestic Chomolungma [Sherpa and Tibetan languages] Sagarmatha [Nepali] Mount Everest. You can see that I had the good fortune to watch it change colors at sunset so that I caught the alpenglow red-orange, a rare treat. Usually in the Khumbu clouds descend on the mountains by mid afternoon and the tradition therefore is to go up Kalapathar for this view at sunrise, though it doesn't really make sense as the sun is behind Everest then, bad for photography.

I had gone up Gokyo Ri at sunrise, starting under a 5:30 am just past full moon and stars. The mountains were glowing in the moonlight. We saw Everest from there as well, at a greater distance, but I realized the best views would be at sunset - and I was soooo lucky.
