The Nepalese government has 20/10/2024 approved the establishment of an immigration office at the Korala border, a strategic point between Nepal and China in the Upper Mustang region. This office aims to facilitate cross-border travel and trade between the two countries, especially benefiting the local residents of Mustang who rely on Tibet for essential goods. This new development is also expected to boost tourism in the remote areas of Mustang by making the region more accessible to international travelers.

The Korala border point, located at an altitude of approximately 4,650 meters, had been closed since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, but it reopened in 2023. The newly constructed immigration office, consisting of a 10-room prefabricated building, is situated near China’s customs office, and necessary infrastructure like electricity and internet has already been extended to the area. Authorities believe that this step will promote tourism and trade, enhancing connectivity between Nepal and Tibet
