Pungyen Gompa is more than a sacred monastery; it’s a place with deep spiritual and historical significance. Over 400 years old, the gompa sits amidst breathtaking views of Mount Manaslu and its surrounding peaks. The hike to Pungyen Gompa is challenging but rewarding, with serene trails dotted by grazing yaks and mountain goats.
A tragic tale lingers here. An unsuccessful Japanese expedition in the 1950s is said to have displeased the spirit gods of Manaslu, triggering a massive avalanche. The disaster destroyed the gompa and claimed the lives of 18 villagers including nuns of the monastery. Climbers were only allowed to continue their expeditions after donating to rebuild the monastery.
Pungyen Gompa stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the unique bond between culture and nature in Manaslu.
