⚠️ IMPORTANT ANNAPURNA TREKKING UPDATE | 13 AUGUST 2026

According to the latest notice from TAAN Pokhara, heavy monsoon rainfall has caused landslides and flooding around Birethanti by the Modi Khola, an important entry point for the Ghorepani–Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) treks.

The situation has affected road access toward Tikhedunga, Ghandruk and Samrung, with sections reported as completely closed or severely disrupted. Recent flooding in the Modi Khola corridor has already damaged roads and trekking infrastructure in the area, making travel conditions unpredictable during the monsoon season.

🚨 If You Are Trekking in the Annapurna Region
If you are planning to start the Ghorepani–Poon Hill Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, or other treks around this area during these dates, please do not rely only on an old itinerary or previously available road conditions.

Before leaving Pokhara, Nayapul, or Birethanti, check the latest route information with:

Local authorities and trekking information centers
Your licensed trekking guide or local trekking agency
Road and trail conditions can change quickly during heavy rainfall. Landslides, swollen rivers, damaged bridges and road washouts may make a route that was open yesterday unsafe or inaccessible today.

🥾 Consider Alternative Routes
Depending on the latest local conditions, trekkers may need to use an alternative walking route or adjust their itinerary. Do not attempt to cross a flooded river, damaged bridge, active landslide area or unstable road simply to stay on schedule.

Recent reports indicate that alternative access routes have been considered around the Ghandruk–Birethanti corridor, while some trekking routes have remained accessible on foot with local guidance.

August is still the monsoon season in Nepal, and the Annapurna region can experience heavy rain, slippery trails, landslides and rapidly changing river levels. Your safety should always come before completing a planned itinerary.

What is the best Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary? (12 Days with 2 acclimatization days)

If you're looking for a well-paced Everest Base Camp (EBC) itinerary, I think this classic 12-day route offers one of the best balances between acclimatization, scenery, and reaching Everest Base Camp safely. It includes two acclimatization days (Namche Bazaar and Dingboche), visits Namche Bazaar, the famous Tengboche Monastery, and finishes with a sunrise hike to Kala Patthar for the best views of Mount Everest.

Day 1: Kathmandu → Lukla → Phakding
Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla.
Trek to Phakding (2,610 m / 8,563 ft).
Distance: 8 km
Walking time: 3 hours

Day 2: Phakding → Namche Bazaar
Trek through Monjo and Jorsalle before entering Sagarmatha National Park.
Cross the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge and climb to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m / 11,290 ft).
Distance: 11 km
Walking time: 5–6 hours

Day 3: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar
Hike to the Everest View Hotel for your first panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other Himalayan peaks.
Visit the traditional Sherpa village of Khumjung before returning to Namche.
Distance: 6.6 km
Walking time: 3–4 hours

Day 4: Namche Bazaar → Tengboche
Trek via Kyangjuma and Phunki Tenga to Tengboche (3,860 m / 12,664 ft).
Visit the famous Tengboche Monastery, the largest monastery in the Khumbu region, with incredible views of Ama Dablam and Everest.
Distance: 9 km
Walking time: 5–6 hours

Day 5: Tengboche → Dingboche
Continue through Pangboche and Somare to Dingboche (4,410 m / 14,465 ft).
Distance: 11 km
Walking time: 4–5 hours

Day 6: Acclimatization Day in Dingboche
Hike to Nangkartshang Peak, gaining around 400–500 meters in elevation before returning to Dingboche.
This is an important acclimatization hike to prepare for higher elevations.

Day 7: Dingboche → Lobuche
Trek via Thukla Pass and the Everest Memorials to Lobuche.
Elevation: 4,940 m (16,207 ft)
Distance: 8 km
Walking time: 5–6 hours

Day 8: Lobuche → Gorak Shep → Everest Base Camp
Trek to Gorak Shep and continue to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft).
Return to Gorak Shep for the night.

In my opinion, this is one of the best Everest Base Camp itineraries because it follows the "climb high, sleep low" principle with two dedicated acclimatization days, reducing the risk of altitude sickness while giving you time to enjoy iconic highlights like Namche Bazaar, Everest View Hotel, Khumjung Village, Tengboche Monastery, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar.

Flight to Lukla – You can choose a regular domestic flight or upgrade to a helicopter for greater flexibility and comfort.
Accommodation – Standard teahouses are the most affordable option, while luxury lodges offer private rooms, better facilities, and higher comfort at a premium price.

These seasons offer the most stable weather, excellent mountain views, and safer trail conditions. However, recent years have also seen more frequent extreme weather linked to climate change, making timing more important than ever.

- Spring (March–May): The Most Colorful Season:

Spring is the most popular season for the Everest Base Camp trek. As winter snow melts, the trails become accessible, forests bloom with rhododendrons, and temperatures gradually rise. This is also the main Everest climbing season, so trekkers can witness expedition teams preparing at Base Camp.
