The Raute are an indigenous, nomadic hunter-gatherer community in Nepal, recognized as the country's last remaining nomads. Numbering around 566 individuals (2021 census), they live in the forests of the Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, maintaining a distinct culture and relying on foraging, hunting monkeys, and crafting wooden goods.

Key facts about the Raute people:
Lifestyle: Nomadic hunter-gatherers who live in temporary, forest-based camps.
Diet & Economy: Historically, they subsisted on monkeys (langur/macaque) and wild foods. They trade handmade wooden bowls, containers, and baskets for grain and goods with local villagers.
Culture: They speak a distinct Tibeto-Burman language. They are famously reclusive and often refuse to permanently settle, despite pressure to do so.
Status: Listed as an endangered, vulnerable, and marginalized community by the Nepali government.
Population & Location: Concentrated in western Nepal with around 566 members, though some reports suggest smaller numbers are actively nomadic.
Government Support: The government provides a monthly social security allowance to help sustain their community.
Challenges: They face significant challenges, including rapid deforestation, pressure to modernize, lack of healthcare leading to high mortality, and a declining population.
