The Norgay /Hillary Step was a 40 ft rock face located at approximately 8,790 m / 28,839 ft on the Southeast ridge of Mt Everest. It was half way between the South summit and true summit 8,849 m / 29,032 ft . It was the last real challenge before reaching the summit. The step has been significantly altered or collapsed by the 2015 Nepal Earthquake and is now a gentler snow slope. You can see the South Summit and the 3,500 m drop down into the Western Cwm. Although not technically difficult the extreme altitude and conditions make this part of the climb a real test.

Climbing the Mushroom Ridge on Ama Dablam puts you on 60–70 degree alpine ice, with nearly a 1,000-meter drop toward the Mingbo Valley. The altitude hits fast, but the terrain stays firm and predictable if you keep solid front-points and follow the fixed line. It’s a demanding section, yet absolutely achievable with good pacing and strong guidance. We climbed it with clients this season, and everyone topped out with that mix of exhaustion and quiet surprise. If you want to experience this section in 2026, we’re opening spaces soon.

Climbing the Mushroom Ridge on Ama Dablam puts you on 60–70 degree alpine ice with nearly a 1,000-meter drop toward the Mingbo Valley. If you want to experience this section in 2026, we’re opening spaces soon.

For the first time, Where Is It Wednesday was a stumper last week, so today we're going to talk more about MOUNT MERU, TANZANIA!

Located just 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru has a lot in common with its taller and more famous neighbor. They're both dormant volcanoes, they're both among the highest mountains in Africa, and they're both trekking peaks, which means no technical climbing skills are required to reach the top. Summit day is difficult, but they're both accessible to acclimatized hikers with good fitness levels. And the views are *stunning.* 🗻

Because Meru and Kilimanjaro are located so close together, it's possible to summit both peaks on the same trip. If you're interested in talking more about either mountain - or both! - drop us a line. You can see details about our next Kilimanjaro expedition (planned for February 2026) on our website: https://www.worldsherpas.com/trekking/kilimanjaro-rongairoute/
