The Norgay /Hillary Step was a 40 ft rock face located at approximately 8,790 m / 28,839 ft on the Southeast ridge of Mt Everest. It was half way between the South summit and true summit 8,849 m / 29,032 ft . It was the last real challenge before reaching the summit. The step has been significantly altered or collapsed by the 2015 Nepal Earthquake and is now a gentler snow slope. You can see the South Summit and the 3,500 m drop down into the Western Cwm. Although not technically difficult the extreme altitude and conditions make this part of the climb a real test.
