Nepal is going through one of its hardest weeks in years. On the morning of August 26, a flash flood tore down the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers through Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. More than 700 lives have been lost, and rescue teams are still searching for the missing. Our hearts are with every family in the affected valley.

Swipe through for the full picture: what happened, the honest region-by-region status, and how you can help from anywhere in the world.

The short version? The flood followed one river corridor. Everest, Annapurna, Kathmandu and almost every trekking region were never in its path and are running normally. Langtang treks continue via an alternative route through Dhunche.

To support relief directly, the official Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund accepts international cards, and by law every rupee goes to rescue and rebuilding:

And if you were planning to trek Nepal this autumn, please come. After 2015, cancelled trips to unaffected regions hurt mountain families who were never in danger. Your visit puts income straight into their hands, faster than almost any aid channel.

The mountains of Nepal are open. ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

The mountains have taken back one of their own.
Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja lost his life in the avalanche on Broad Peak, along with his fellow climbers. Even writing these words feels unreal.
For those of us who have spent our lives in the trekking and climbing world of Nepal, Nims was more than a record holder. Before him, the world celebrated the summits and forgot the people who made them possible. He changed that. When he stood on all 14 eight-thousanders in six months and six days, he did it with a Nepali flag and a Nepali team, and suddenly the world had to say the names of our climbers out loud. Sherpa, Gurung, Magar, Rai - the guides and porters who carried this industry on their backs for a century finally got the recognition they always deserved.
He showed a generation of young Nepalis that the ceiling they were told about does not exist. A boy from Myagdi, a Gurkha, a soldier, and then the man who redefined what the human body and spirit can do above 8,000 metres. "Nothing is impossible" was not a slogan for him. It was simply how he lived.
It was an honour to watch him do the impossible in our lifetime.
To his family, his team at Elite Exped, and the families of every climber lost on Broad Peak - the entire mountain community of Nepal grieves with you. These mountains gave Nims his purpose, and in the end they kept him.
The summits will stand a little quieter now. But his legacy lives in every young Nepali who looks up at a peak and believes.
Rest easy, Dai, alongside all the climbers who never came home. The mountains will remember. So will we.

Our hearts are heavy today.

Nirmal "Nims" Purja - Nimsdai - the pride of Nepal and one of the greatest mountaineers of our time, is among 10 climbers missing after a massive avalanche struck Broad Peak (8,047m) in Pakistan's Karakoram on Thursday morning. The team, including five Nepali guides, was climbing between Camp 2 and Camp 3 when the avalanche hit.

Rescue teams and helicopters are searching as we speak, and the weather is holding clear. We are praying with everything we have.

Nims showed the world what Nepali climbers are capable of. He carried our flag to all 14 of the world's highest peaks and inspired a whole generation in the mountains.

Stay strong, brother. The whole of Nepal is with you and your team. Come home.

Manaslu doesn't announce itself. You walk out of Machha Khola in the heat, follow the Budhi Gandaki through gorges and suspension bridges, and somewhere past Namrung the air changes. Pine forests, mani walls, prayer flags. Then Samagaun opens up and there it is: the eighth highest mountain on earth, close enough to feel it.

Larke Pass at 5,106m is the reward. Fewer crowds than Annapurna, more culture than almost anywhere.

Manaslu Circuit, 14 days. Book with us at trekkingteam.com
