๐ŸŒธ Fatherโ€™s Day in Nepal โ€“ A Celebration of Love & Honor ๐ŸŒธ

In Nepal, Fatherโ€™s Day is not fixed like in the Western calendar. It is celebrated on the new moon day of the month of Bhadra (Gokarna Aunsi), a day filled with deep respect and gratitude for fathers.

On this special occasion, children honor their fathers with love, rituals, and offerings. A traditional puja is performed, where fathers receive tika, sagun (egg, meat, fish, ginger, and alcohol), fruits, and gifts as a symbol of blessings and gratitude. For those whose fathers have passed away, sons and daughters visit Gokarneshwar temple or other holy places to pay homage and offer prayers for their eternal peace.

Unlike the global way of simply giving cards or presents, in Nepal this day carries a spiritual essence โ€” blending family bonds with cultural and religious traditions. It is a reminder of the timeless role fathers play as guides, protectors, and pillars of strength.

The great harvest festival of Nepal, Dashain is a time for family reunions, exchange of gifts and blessings, and elaborate pujas. Dashain honors the Goddess Durga, who was created out of the shakti or energy of all the gods, armed with weapons from each of them.

Indra Jatra: A Celebration of Culture and Tradition in Kathmandu
Indra Jatra, one of the most vibrant and exciting festivals in Nepal, takes place in the heart of Kathmandu every year, usually in September. This eight-day celebration marks the end of the monsoon and honors Indra, the god of rain and king of heaven in Hindu mythology.
The festival is a blend of religious and cultural events that bring together people from all walks of life. The festivities begin with the er****on of a sacred wooden pole (Yosin or Linga) at Hanuman Dhoka. The highlight of the festival is the grand procession of the Living Goddess Kumari, who is taken around the streets of Kathmandu in a beautifully decorated chariot.
Thousands of devotees gather to receive blessings from the Kumari.
Other attractions include the masked dances of deities and demons, including the popular Lakhe dance, which captivates the crowd with its energy and mysticism. The festival also features reenactments of ancient legends and the display of sacred images of Bhairab, adding a unique spiritual dimension to the celebration.
Indra Jatra is not just a religious event; it is a celebration of Kathmandu's rich history, community spirit, and living heritage. If you're in Kathmandu during this time, it's an experience you don't want to miss!

G*i Jatra is a festival in Nepal to commemorate the deceased. Traditionally, families who have lost a loved one during the past year participate by leading a cow, or a young boy dressed as one, through the streets. This festival, which usually takes place in Kathmandu Valley, serves as a way to ease the grief of families, reminding them that death is a natural part of life. The festival also includes humorous performances and satire, helping to lighten the mood and encourage acceptance of loss. G*i Jatra is a unique blend of mourning and celebration, rooted in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
