Today, we pause to honor and remember a true titan of the mountains, Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja, whose extraordinary vision, courage, and relentless spirit elevated Nepali mountaineering onto the global stage like never before.

Nimsdai was far more than an elite climber—he was a trailblazer who redefined what human determination can achieve. Through groundbreaking achievements and an unyielding commitment to his craft, he shattered perceived limits and ensured that the world recognized the incredible strength, skill, and leadership of Nepal’s climbing community.
To Nimsdai and his remarkable team: you were not just champions—you were absolute heroes. You carried the flag of Nepal 🇳🇵 to the highest points on Earth, showing the world what unity, passion, and belief look like in action.

In a milestone for mountaineering and diplomacy, U.S. Embassy Nepal’s Public Affairs Chief, Mike Harker, successfully summited Mount Everest on May 20, 2026  at 9:10 AM, becoming the first serving American Foreign Service Officer to scale the world’s highest peak. This feat is a proud moment for Freedom 250, the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, serving as a reminder of the American spirit of drive, grit, and exploration.  
 
Undertaken in his personal capacity, Mike’s expedition is the culmination of a 20-year journey that began during a 2006 trek to Annapurna Base Camp, which first sparked Mike’s lifelong bond with Nepal.  
 
This successful summit attempt underscores nearly eight decades of U.S.-Nepal friendship and highlights how sustainable adventure tourism builds global connections while fueling local economies.  
 
Crucially, this climb spotlights the bravery, world-class expertise, and dedication of Nepal’s Sherpa community. They are the true backbone of Himalayan mountaineering, and this achievement would be impossible without them. Protecting Everest is vital to ensuring this iconic global treasure can continue to support Himalayan communities and inspire adventurers for generations to come.
