According to Hindu mythology, Gosainkunda is where the heaven meets the earth. Gosainkunda trek is named after a highly sought pilgrimage, which is also the zenith of this trek. The trek basically is named after a glacial melt, a lake, which is believed to have been created by the trident of Lord Shiva. Telling you the story in short, Lord shiva once drank the poison that evolved while the earth was being created. And, in the agony of and pain resulted from the poison, he flew to the himalayas and rested his trident. As a result, the spring erupted and hence the lord pacified his pain by drinking the water.
