Nirmal Purja—widely known as “Nims Dai”—is one of the most influential and fearless mountaineers of the modern era. Born in the Myagdi district of Nepal, he rose from a modest background to become a global icon in high-altitude climbing and human endurance.
Before his mountaineering fame, Nims Dai served in the British Armed Forces, first in the Gurkhas and later in the elite UK Special Boat Service (SBS). His military career shaped his discipline, mental strength, and leadership—qualities that later defined his success in the mountains.
Nims Dai became world-famous through his groundbreaking achievement called Project Possible in 2019. In this historic feat, he climbed all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in just 6 months and 6 days, smashing the previous record of nearly 8 years. This extraordinary accomplishment redefined what was thought possible in mountaineering.
Among his most notable climbs are peaks like Mount Everest, K2, and Annapurna I—all considered some of the most challenging and dangerous mountains on Earth. He also played a key role in the first-ever winter ascent of K2 in 2021, leading a team of Nepali climbers to a historic summit.
Nims Dai is also the founder of Elite Exped, a company that offers high-end expedition services while promoting Nepali leadership in the mountaineering industry. Through his work, he has helped shift global recognition toward the skills and achievements of Nepali climbers.
His inspiring journey is documented in the Netflix film 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, which showcases not only his record-breaking climbs but also his determination to challenge limits and elevate the image of Nepal on the world stage.
