Trekking to Island Peak, also known as Imja Tse, is one of Nepal’s most iconic adventures, perfectly bridging the gap between high-altitude hiking and entry-level mountaineering. Situated at 6,189 meters (20,305 feet) in the heart of the Khumbu region, the peak earned its name from Eric Shipton’s 1951 party because it appears as an "island" in a sea of ice, surrounded by the towering giants of Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam.
The journey typically follows the classic Everest Base Camp trail before veering toward the village of Chhukung. While the approach is a scenic trek through Sherpa villages and rhododendron forests, the summit push is a serious undertaking that requires basic technical skills. Climbers must navigate a glaciated plateau, cross crevasses via ladders, and tackle a final, steep snow headwall using fixed ropes and jumars. The reward for this physical exertion is a breathtaking, 360-degree panorama of the Himalayas, offering a unique "eye-to-eye" perspective of the Lhotse South Face that few other treks can match.
