BARPARK, GORKHA, NEPAL

Barpak has been beyond recognition due to the massive earthquake in 25th April 2015 of 7.9 magnitudes and in 12th May 2015 of 7.3 magnitudes. This scenic village of Braves turned into mess in a minute due to this natural destructive force. There was the epicenter of the first one and many houses collapsed and many died. But, the village is under renovation and going to be alive again. There is nothing difference in natural beauty, the culture and the hospitality of people. Now, the village has got different form after the destruction. There is only the physical loss. Tourists can visit this beautiful village and feel its charm.

Barpak is one of the villages of Gorkha, situated at an altitude of 1900 m above sea level at 45 km 928 miles) North of Gorkha Bazaar. In early times when Nepal was divided in many states, Barpak was ruled by Ghale king. Barpak, homeland of Victoria Cross honored late Captain Gaje Ghale, is visited by Dr. Roman Herzog, President of Germany in 1997. It has approximately 1200 households with population around 15,000. The enchanting scenery and the community that has thrived in this village has worked together and survived from a long time. Many Barpakis rely on agriculture whereas many men join British Gurkhas, Singapore Police, Indian Army, Nepal Army or go to other countries for doing job. The village is provided with basic infrastructures such as paved trail, water taps, drainage, public toilet, electricity, communications, health, and security facilities. Brimming with colors, a culture and scenic wonder, Barpak is mind-bendingly intense place. For those who want still more, it’s now possible to add a whole new adventurous twist.

The landscape and cleanliness of the village really adds value to its natural beauty. One can see Buddha Himal standing on the other side of the village. From a nearby Mumche hill, the panoramic view of the Ganesh himal, Buddha Himal, Siringe Himal, Manaslu Himal and the Himchuli is breathtaking. the view of the rivers is engrossing and captivating. Daraundi River that spills from the Gorkha Himal and Ghhulung glacier in the Manaslu region, cutting its path through a deep gorge of tropical jungle is awe-inspiring. For those who wish to walk up the hill and seek more adventure can reach Narad Pokhari after two days trek from Barpak. Narad Pokhari (4,500 m) is believed to be a pilgrimage site for the Hindus.

The majority of the people living in Barpak are Ghales and Gurungs with minority of Sunars and Pariyars. The houses are built up of stones. They celebrate festivals like Dashain, Tihar, Maghe Sankranti, Pandhra Poush, Baisakh Purnima etc. Barpaki people have their own native language but few of them can understand and speak English. Barpak is a mosaic of different people of Buddhists, Hindus and othe religions. It is truly a colorful garden of people whose deep relationship with the culture and nature is hard to find anywhere else. One can see temple, monastery and church in the village. Barpak now offers perfect home-stay experience besides jaw dropping landscape of snow covered mountains.

Gorkha Bazaar is about 156 km far from Kathmandu and 125 km from Pokhara. From Kathmandu, it is more than 5 hours drive. Barpak can be accessed via Prithivi Highway that joins Kathmandu and Pokhara. From Abukhaireni (adjoining to Prithivi Highway), the road leads to ‘Barah Kilo’, a gravel road leads to Baluwa and about 7 hours enjoyable trek via Mandre, one can reach Barpak. Trekking through mountain wilderness is rewarding experiences.

Midway on the day-long drive between Kathmandu and Pokhara lies the hilltop settlement of Bandipur, a Newar town with its age-old flavor still intact. Climb through pristine forests on the historical trail at Dumre Bazaar to a town that has hardly changed. Well preserved Bandipur today invites travelers to experience its unique offerings: rich hill culture, mountain views, and hiking.

Unlike most trading posts in the Nepal hills, Bandipur has retained its age-old cultural attributes - temples, shrines, sacred caves, innumerable festivals, and a Newari architecture that harks back to the Kathmandu Valley of old.

Located on a wide saddle at a height of 1,030 m the surrounding hills of Bandipur are ideal for hiking along trails that take you through tribal villages, verdant forests, and hilltop shrines that once doubled as fortresses.

Following the conquest of the Kathmandu Valley in 1768 by King Prithvi Narayan Shah, many of the valley's Newar inhabitants fanned out to establish trading posts in the hills. Some traders made their way to Bandipur, from where they began to meet the needs of an increasingly mercantile British India and the Himalayan hinterland.

An obscure mountain village was transformed into a bustling commercial center, and Bandipur became a funneling point where all trails from central Nepal (and Tibet to the north) converged to head southward, crossing the great Narayani River and the Chitwan jungle to reach the Indian railhead of Narkatia Ganj.

In the 1800s, this bazaar town grew in wealth and importance. Traders came from Tibet with musk pods, mountain herbs, animal skins, and horses. Calico, to***co, glassware, and kerosene came in from British India. However, when Nepal opened her doors to the world in the 1950s, Pokhara with its airfield began to gain importance, and in 1972 the Kathmandu-Pokhara highway by-passed Bandipur.

However, when Nepal opened her doors to the world in the 1950s, Pokhara with its airfield began to gain importance, and in 1972 the Kathmandu-Pokhara highway by-passed Bandipur altogether.

But, the road's alignment was a blessing in disguise - while many Newar hill towns lost their distinctiveness after joining the highway grid, Bandipur retained its originality. Because Bandipur's merchant class had built sturdily, their buildings have stood firm and are used today once more to house shops, cafes and lodgings.

The place names around Bandipur indicate that Magars, whose chieftains ruled numerous principalities of today's central Nepal, originally inhabited the surrounding region, known as Tanahun. When Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha set out to expand his dominion, Tanahun was a powerful adversary that was overcome only after a hard battle.

Majority of the current residents are originally traders from Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu Valley who made their way to Bandipur and settled here. While the Newars are predominant in Bandipur, the Magar and Gurung ethnic groups inhabit the hillsides growing rice, millet, corn and mustard on terrace fields.

VISIT NEPAL 2020 | WHAT TO EXPECT & EXPLORE IN NEPAL IN 2020.

After the success of Visit Nepal Year 1998 and Nepal Tourism Year 2011, the Tourism Board of Nepal introduced Visit Nepal Campaign 2020. The Campaign was announced in 2015 to be held in 2018 but was later postponed to 2020.

The mainstream media publicized Nepal as utterly devastated by the earthquake in 2015 and failed to show that Kathmandu with other major cities was almost intact. The earthquake significantly affected the inflow of tourists in 2016 as the number of tourists halved compared with previous year.

The year 2017 saw the inflow of tourists bounce back to the pre-earthquake numbers. The year 2017 saw 940,218 foreigners enter the country. Some came for recreational activities while some visited to support the people of affected areas and with the motive to help the country economically by visiting Nepal.

The Visit Nepal 2020 campaign was scheduled in 2018 to promote that Nepal was a safe place to travel and only 12 of 75 districts were affected by the earthquake.
