EVEREST IS BEAUTIFUL — BUT ALTITUDE DOESN’T CARE HOW FIT YOU ARE. 🏔️🥺
Everest Base Camp sits at 5,364 m / 17,598 ft, where your body must work harder because atmospheric pressure is much lower.
Whether you’re an experienced athlete or a first-time trekker, altitude sickness can affect anyone.
🤕 AMS — Acute Mountain Sickness
Watch for:
• Headache
• Nausea or vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Dizziness
• Unusual fatigue or weakness
• Disturbed sleep
⚠️ If you develop symptoms, don’t simply push through them.
Tell your guide, rest, monitor your condition and don’t ascend to sleep higher while you’re sick from altitude. If symptoms worsen, descent may be necessary.
🚨 HAPE — High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema
This is a serious condition affecting the lungs.
Warning signs include:
• Breathlessness at rest
• Persistent cough
• Extreme weakness
• Rapid breathing
• Major reduction in exercise ability
🚨 HACE — High-Altitude Cerebral Edema
This is a serious condition affecting the brain.
Watch for:
• Confusion
• Strange behaviour
• Severe drowsiness
• Loss of coordination
• Difficulty walking normally
• Altered consciousness
Suspected HAPE or HACE is an emergency. Urgent descent and medical attention are critical.
🏔️ How can you reduce the risk?
✓ Ascend gradually
✓ Allow time to acclimatize
✓ Walk at a sustainable pace
✓ Eat and hydrate appropriately
✓ Avoid excessive alcohol
✓ Report symptoms early
✓ Never hide how you feel just to reach Base Camp
Remember:
Everest Base Camp isn’t a race.
The mountain will still be there tomorrow.
Take your time. Acclimatize. Listen to your body. Listen to your guide.
