After driving from Marpha to Tatopani today, we had a bit of time after lunch and decided to explore the beautiful Narchyang Waterfall – and it turned out to be one of the best side trips we’ve done!
Just a short walk from Tatopani, this 1.5-hour round trip takes you through the peaceful village of Narchyang, home to the warm and welcoming P**n Magar community. The walk itself is lovely – a mix of quiet village paths and stone steps, with incredible views of the valley all around.

The waterfall is absolutely stunning – powerful, serene, and surrounded by lush greenery. You can see it from a distance as you approach the village, and getting up close is totally worth the climb. The peaceful pagoda nearby makes the spot feel even more special.

If you’re heading to or staying in Tatopani, don’t miss this short but memorable trek. A perfect blend of culture, nature, and local charm!

Journey to Lubra, Mustang’s Hidden Gem
After leaving Muktinath, we followed a quiet trail into the heart of Lower Mustang. It took us about six hours to walk 8.5 kilometers through raw, beautiful terrain. The path was silent, with sweeping views, high passes, and the occasional prayer flag waving in the wind.
Eventually, we reached Lubra. A small Bon village tucked into a deep gorge, completely untouched by roads or modern tourism. Life here moves slowly. The Bon religion, older than Tibetan Buddhism, still shapes daily life. The village monastery, over 800 years old, holds ancient murals and a calm, sacred energy you can feel as soon as you arrive.
There are no cars, no shops, no crowds. Just stone houses, quiet trails, and the sound of the river below.
Lubra is not a place you pass through. It is a place you arrive at with intention. And once you do, it stays with you.

Muktinath is a revered spiritual destination cherished by both Hindus and Buddhists. Known as the "Place of Liberation" (Mukti Kshetra) by Hindus, it is believed to offer moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Buddhists call it "Chumig Gyatsa," meaning "Hundred Waters," and regard it as a sacred site where Guru Rinpoche, the great teacher who spread Buddhism across the Himalayas, meditated. The deep spiritual significance, breathtaking Himalayan backdrop, and challenging pilgrimage route make Muktinath a vital destination for spiritual seekers and adventure lovers alike. It stands as a remarkable example of interfaith respect and draws travelers from around the world.
Religious Significance
For Hindus
Muktinath is one of the 108 Divya Desams, sacred sites dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Pilgrims come to bathe under the 108 waterspouts of the Mukti Dhara, believing that this ritual cleanses their sins and brings them closer to salvation.
For Buddhists
The site is believed to hold intense spiritual power. According to Buddhist tradition, Guru Rinpoche meditated here, and the 108 spouts are symbolic of purifying the 108 human defilements—an essential step on the path to enlightenment.
Tourism Importance
Spiritual Tourism
Pilgrims from both faiths visit to connect with the sacred energy of the site and participate in rituals that have been carried out for generations.
Adventure Tourism
Located in the Mustang region of Nepal, Muktinath is surrounded by majestic Himalayan peaks such as the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri. Its remote, high-altitude location adds a thrilling element to the pilgrimage experience.
Cultural Tourism
The harmonious blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions, along with the temple’s unique architecture and the vibrant local culture around the annual Muktinath Yatra, makes it a culturally enriching destination.
Interfaith Harmony
Muktinath is more than a spiritual site—it is a powerful symbol of unity, where two major religions coexist in shared reverence, each drawing meaning and peace from the same sacred ground.
Ready to begin your spiritual journey or Himalayan adventure? Let Ama Adventure guide you to Muktinath, where culture, nature, and devotion meet. Plan your unforgettable pilgrimage today.

Jhong Cave of Chhoser – Mysterious Caves of Upper Mustang, Nepal

Today we arrive at Jhong, a peaceful village that was once part of Upper Mustang and now falls under Lower Mustang due to recent administrative changes. This village is known for the remarkable Shija Jhong Cave, also called Chhoser Cave. Carved into a high cliff, this ancient multi-story cave has long captured the interest of historians and travelers. It has served many purposes throughout history, including as a shelter, a burial site, a meditation chamber, and a storage area. Believed to be over 2,500 years old, the cave reflects the strong influence of Tibetan Buddhism and the older Bon religion, offering a deep insight into the lives and beliefs of the people who once lived in this remote mountainous region.
Origins and Mystery
The Shija Jhong Cave is one of many ancient man-made cave complexes found throughout Mustang. Its construction shows the incredible skill of the people who shaped it into the cliff. While the exact reasons behind building these caves remain uncertain, they are believed to have served different roles over many centuries.
Historical Usage
In the early period, before 1000 BC, the caves were used as burial chambers. Human remains and other evidence suggest ancient funerary practices were performed here. By the 10th century, during times of conflict and war, the caves became places of refuge. Villagers brought their families to live inside these caves for safety. After the 1400s, the caves found new uses as storage rooms for grains and as quiet spaces for meditation and spiritual retreat.
Cultural and Religious Significance
The culture of Mustang is deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism along with the older Bon tradition. These religious influences are clearly reflected in the use and symbolism of the cave complex. Practices such as sky burials, where the dead are offered to nature, were once carried out in this region. The caves remain a powerful symbol of the spiritual traditions and beliefs of the local people.
Location and Access
Jhong village is located near Chhoser in the highlands of what was traditionally known as Upper Mustang. It can be reached by trekking, mountain biking, or on horseback from Lo Manthang, the historic walled city of Mustang. The journey to the caves takes visitors through breathtaking landscapes and into the heart of Mustang’s ancient cultural heritage.
