Day 1 | Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Journey

Kathmandu → Ghatte Khola (Nepal–Tibet Border Route)

Day 1 covers the overland drive from Kathmandu toward Ghatte Khola, following the Trishuli River valley into Nepal’s northern hills. It’s a full travel day with dramatic mountain roads, river gorges, terraced landscapes, and the first strong sense of the pilgrimage ahead—an essential start before crossing further toward Tibet.

Route: Kathmandu → Ghatte Khola

Travel time: approx. 7–9 hours (road conditions dependent)

Distance: approx. 140–170 km

Best moments: Scenic Himalayan drive, riverside viewpoints, local hill towns, border-region landscapes, and a calm overnight stop for rest and preparation.

🗓️ 14-DAY OVERLAND ITINERARY (Ex-Kathmandu)

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu — visit Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swayambhunath.
Day 3: Drive to Timure Border, overnight near the border.
Day 4: Drive to Kyirong, the first Tibetan town across the border.
Day 5: Drive to Saga / New Dongba through the high-altitude landscapes of Tibet.
Day 6: Acclimatization day at Saga / New Dongba — short walks and rest.
Day 7: Drive to Lake Manasarovar (4,590 m) — sacred ritual bath and prayers.
Day 8: Drive to Darchen, base town for Kailash Parikrama.
Day 9: Drive to Yamadwar and begin trek to Diraphuk (4,900 m).
Day 10: Trek to Zuthulphuk via Dolma La Pass (5,630 m) — the most challenging day.
Day 11: Trek ends; drive back to Saga.
Day 12: Drive to Kyirong.
Day 13: Cross the border and drive back to Kathmandu.
Day 14: Departure — transfer to the airport or hotel extension as per your plan.

On the journey toward Saga, travelers often stop at the sacred Milarepa Cave, a place deeply connected to Tibet’s revered yogi and poet-saint, Jetsun Milarepa. It is believed that Milarepa meditated here, leaving behind his blessings and spiritual energy that still resonates through the cave walls today.

🙏 Pilgrims and visitors pause here to pay their respects, light incense, and reflect in silence before continuing toward Kailash and Mansarovar. The cave offers not only a spiritual experience but also stunning views of the surrounding Tibetan landscape.
