Everest Summit #31
A Living Legend: Kami Rita Sherpa Summits Everest for the 31st Time – A World Record
This morning, on 27th May 2025, Kami Rita Sherpa, the pride of Nepal and a true mountaineering legend, stood on the summit of Mt. Everest for the 31st time, breaking his own world record. His achievement once again proves that with determination, discipline, and dedication, no goal is too high.
Born on 17th January 1970, in Thame Village, Solukhumbu — the same village that gave us the great Tenzing Norgay — Kami Rita Sherpa has become a global symbol of courage and endurance. Since his first successful ascent in 1994, he has devoted his life to guiding climbers on the world’s highest peaks, including Everest, K2, Cho-Oyu, Manaslu, and Lhotse.
Over the past 29 years, he has reached the summit of Everest 31 times, scaled five 8000-meter peaks a total of 44 times, and conquered K2 in Pakistan. His achievements reflect not only his personal strength but also the spirit of all Sherpas — humble, resilient, and deeply connected to the mountains.
In May 2023, Kami Rita broke his own record by summiting Everest twice within a week, marking his 27th and 28th ascents. In May 2024, he did it again, reaching the top twice more. And now, in May 2025, he stands proud with his 31st successful summit.
Kami Rita's legacy is rooted in family as well. His father was among the first professional Sherpa guides after Everest opened to foreign climbers in 1950, and his brother, Lakpa Rita Sherpa, also reached Everest 17 times.
Despite his fame, Kami Rita remains humble. He once told the BBC, “I never thought about making records. I didn’t even know you could make a record. If I had known, I would have climbed even more in my early years.” He also said, “I am healthy and can keep climbing until I’m 60. We were born in the Himalayas — with oxygen, it’s no big deal.”
For Kami Rita, Everest is not just a mountain — it’s sacred. Known as Chomolungma, the goddess of the Himalayas, the mountain is something he respects deeply. “Before each climb, I start worshiping her and asking for forgiveness. Even at the summit, while others take photos, I bow my head again and ask for her blessing,” he says.
