TODAY'S FEATURE: SHEY PHOKSUNDO LAKE, DOLPA

We get asked a lot: "Is the colour real?" Yes. Every time.

These four frames are from our last recce to Ringmo village. Photo 1 is the welcome sign everyone stops at. Photo 2 shows our local horseman taking the high route — a common option for acclimatizing guests. Photo 3 is the famous cliff trail, carved into rock hundreds of meters above the water. Photo 4 is the lake at midday, when the wind drops and it turns to glass.

Some context for planners:

Location: Shey Phoksundo National Park, Dolpa, 3,611.5m
Depth: 145m, Nepal's deepest alpine lake
Culture: sacred to Bon and Buddhist traditions, with chortens and prayer flags lining the shore
Access: fly Nepalgunj–Juphal, then 3 days trek via Chepka and the Phoksundo waterfall. October–November is classic, but June–September gives you this saturated turquoise with fewer crowds.
We run small-group Phoksundo treks with local Dolpo guides who grew up in Ringmo. If you've done Annapurna or Langtang and want the next level of quiet, this is it.

Before Dolpa turns dry and high, it's green in a way you don't expect. Steep valleys folded into each other, small villages tucked into the hillsides, trails that follow rivers instead of roads.

Tin roofs that ping in the rain. Dining halls warmed by a single stove where everyone shares dal bhat and trail stories. Blue windows, stone walls, prayer flags snapping above. One minute you're in a subtropical gorge, a few days later you're waking up to Manaslu framed perfectly over your teahouse balcony.

No room service. Just hot tea when you arrive, a dry bed, and hosts who've been looking after trekkers on the Circuit for generations.

TREKKING GEARS FOR MANASLU CIRCUIT

The Manaslu Circuit is a restricted, remote trek. No tea-house gear shops after Jagat. That means you carry it from day 1.

Our diagram shows the layering system that works from 700m at Soti Khola to 5,106m at Larkya La Pass:

Base: thermal inners + light trekking trousers
Mid: fleece/down jacket
Outer: Gore-Tex shell, windproof gloves, UV400 sunglasses
Essentials: sleeping bag (-15°C), headlamp, water purification, trekking poles
We provide the checklist, permits, and experienced local guides. You bring the fitness.

Phu Village, 4,080 meters — Nar Phu Valley

Photos from 13 May 2023, on the trail a full day north of Nar. Phu sits in a high, cold bowl below Himlung Himal. The houses are built wall to wall, the fields are stone-walled, and life still moves at yak pace.

Phu was closed to the outside world until 2002. Today it's open with a restricted area permit, but you won't find tea-house crowds here. Just clear air, big peaks, and a village that hasn't changed its rhythm.

We run the full Nar Phu circuit in spring and autumn with small groups and local guides from Manang. Message us if Phu is on your list for 2025/2026.

Nar Phu Valley is a restricted region. To visit you need:

Nar Phu Restricted Area Permit
ACAP permit
Licensed guide (mandatory, no independent trekkers)
No roads reach Nar. Everything comes in by foot or yak. That's why it still looks like this.
