Lumbini, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha), is located in present-day Nepal. According to tradition, Queen Maya Devi gave birth to the Buddha here in the 6th century BCE. By the 3rd century CE, Emperor Ashoka of India visited Lumbini and erected a pillar inscribed with his devotion, confirming it as Buddha’s birthplace. A monastery complex grew around the site. From the 3rd to 7th century, Lumbini thrived as a major pilgrimage center. Chinese pilgrims like Faxian (early 5th century) and Xuanzang (7th century) visited and described flourishing monasteries and monuments. However, after the 7th century, Lumbini gradually declined due to political changes and the waning of Buddhism in the region.
