Route to Camp II on Mount Everest Completed for This Spring Season
The route up to the Khumbu Icefall and Camp II for this spring’s Mount Everest expedition has been completed.
According to Aarti Neupane, Director at the Department of Tourism, a team of Icefall Doctors deployed by the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) has finished fixing a 2,200-meter route from Everest Base Camp to Camp II.
Each year, the SPCC undertakes the task of fixing ropes from the base camp up to Camp II, located at an altitude of 6,400 meters. This involves installing ropes, setting up ladders in hazardous areas, and stabilizing unstable snow and ice structures. Above Camp II, the rope-fixing responsibility is awarded through a tender process by the Expedition Operators’ Association, and this year the task has been undertaken by 8K Expeditions.
Due to the constantly shifting landscape, the route up to Camp II gets lost every year, making it a challenging section to rebuild. Icefall Doctors mention that fixing ropes above Camp II is comparatively easier.
According to the Department of Tourism, a total of 134 climbers have received permits for Mount Everest so far this season—27 of them are women and 107 are men.
