As Upper Mustang is a restricted area that has only been opened to foreigners since 1992 against payment of a USD 500 permit for 10 days trekking, the strongly Tibetan-influenced former Kingdom of Mustang has preserved many of its ancient Buddhist traditions. As Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, we will trek up and down through a desert-like, stunningly beautiful landscape. During this special and unique trekking tour to Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, we will walk through villages built in Tibetan style, see ancient monasteries and have extraordinary cultural and scenic impressions.

Day 11

This tour can also be perfectly combined with other treks, such as the Jomsom-Muktinath-Trek or the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri-Community-Trek. There are so many possibilities… just ask me!

The Pilgrim’s trail to Muktinath

Trek level: moderate
Best time: mid of February – mid of Mai / mid of September – December
Duration: 12 days
Max. altitude: Muktinath – 3.800 m
Accommodation: lodges / basic hotels

This tour leads us on the ancient trade routes up the valley of the Kali Gandaki river. The views of the mountains are spectacular. We ascend on one of the most developed trekking trails from moderate climate zones through the world’s deepest valley between the Dhaulagiri (8.167 m) and Annapurna (8.091 m), through traditional Thakali villages, such as Tukche and Marpha, until finally reaching the Tibet-like landscape of Lower Mustang. The vast temple complex of Muktinath, set below the Thorung La, is a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists.

The trek:

Day 01
Pokhara – Birethanti (1.025 m) by taxi – 2 h
Birethanti – Tikhedhunga (1.520 m) – 4 h

Day 02
Tikhedhunga – Ghorepani (2.860 m) – 6 h

Day 03
Ghorepani/P**n Hill – Tatopani (1.190) – 6 h

Day 04
Tatopani – Ghasa (2.010 m) – 5 h

Day 05
Ghasa – Marpha (2.670 m) – 6 h

Day 06
Marpha – Kagbeni (2.800) – 4 h

Day 07
Kagbeni – Jhong (3.500 m) – 5 h

Day 08
Jhong – Muktinath (3.800) – 2 h

Day 09
Muktinath – Lupra (2.900 m) – Marpha – 7 h (alternatively to Jomsom (2.720) – 5 h)

Day 10
Marpha – Ghasa – 6 h

Day 11
Ghasa – Tatopani (1.190) – 5 h

Day 12
Tatopani – Pokhara by bus/jeep – 5 h

Day 09/10
Alternative: Jomsom – Beni – Pokhara by bus / jeep / plan

Please note that this itinerary is merely a proposal and be adjusted to your special wishes. I chose it for good altitude acclimatization. Another idea would be to go by car to Beni, to continue by bus to Ghasa, starting the trek there. You could take a plane back from Jomsom to Pokhara which, however, very much depends on the weather conditions.
