Laprak is a picturesque and traditional Gurung village located in the northern part of Gorkha District, Nepal. Nestled on the lap of the Manaslu Himal at an altitude of about 2,200 meters, Laprak offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, warm hospitality, and authentic rural culture. It is one of the most charming mountain villages in Nepal, known for its breathtaking views, traditional stone houses, and strong community spirit.

Scenery and Location

Laprak lies on a hillside overlooking the Budhi Gandaki Valley, surrounded by terraced fields, rhododendron forests, and snowcapped peaks. The mighty Manaslu (8,163 m) and other peaks like Bouddha Himal and Himalchuli dominate the skyline, offering spectacular sunrise and sunset views. The village itself is built entirely of stone, giving it a unique traditional character.

People and Culture

The majority of Laprak’s inhabitants belong to the Gurung ethnic community, known for their bravery, kindness, and rich cultural traditions. Visitors can experience genuine rural life — from traditional farming to local music, dances, and festivals. The villagers are also known for their involvement in the British and Indian Gurkha regiments, which adds historical significance to the community.

Trekking and Activities

Laprak lies along the route of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, making it a popular stop for trekkers. Many visitors trek from Barpak to Laprak, a scenic trail that provides magnificent mountain views and cultural immersion. The village also serves as a starting point for short hikes to Danda Gaun, Singla Pass, and Gumba Danda, offering panoramic views of the Manaslu range.

Earthquake and Reconstruction

Laprak was heavily affected by the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, which destroyed most of the traditional houses. However, the community’s resilience was remarkable. With national and international support, a new settlement known as New Laprak (Laprak Pipal Danda) was developed nearby. Despite this, many villagers have continued to rebuild and live in the original Laprak village, keeping its charm and culture alive.

Hospitality and Experience

Visitors can stay in local homestays or simple guesthouses, experiencing genuine Gurung hospitality. Guests are often welcomed with local food such as dhido, gundruk, sel roti, and homemade raksi (local millet wine). Cultural programs, songs, and dances like Ghatu and Sorathi offer a glimpse into traditional Gurung heritage.
