Our hearts are with everyone affected by today’s devastating floods across Nepal.

At this time, all members of our Paddle Nepal family and guide team are safe and accounted for. We are deeply grateful—but we know many people who have lost so much, and many families are still waiting for news of their loved ones.

Nim and our guide and rescue team are in communication with the authorities and standing by to assist with rescue and recovery efforts wherever we may be needed.

As a river community, we understand both the beauty and the immense power of Nepal’s rivers. Today, we stand with all those affected and with everyone working tirelessly under extraordinarily difficult conditions.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to us sharing concern and prayer. Your thoughts mean the world to us.

Earthquake – Part One: The First 24 Hours

On 25 April 2015, at 11:56 a.m., a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal.

For our Paddle Nepal family in Pokhara, the first 24 hours were filled with fear, uncertainty, aftershocks—and immense gratitude as every guide and every guest was accounted for and safe.

We were among the fortunate.

Raising the Standard

In 2015, Paddle Nepal reached an important milestone, becoming the first rafting company in Nepal to have its entire guide team achieve International Rafting Federation (IRF) certification.

For us, this was never about collecting certificates. It was about investing in our people—giving every guide the opportunity to develop their skills, pursue excellence, and return safely home after every trip.

We’re especially grateful to IRF Instructor Trainer Mark Hirst, whose mentorship, friendship, and generosity helped shape this chapter of Paddle Nepal’s journey.

That milestone also marked the beginning of another journey, as Nim embarked on the pathway toward becoming an IRF Instructor—a story we’ll share when the time is right.

The whitewater industry never stands still, and neither do we. Both Paddle Nepal and the IRF have continued to evolve over the years. This post celebrates an important milestone in our journey and the standards that helped shape it.

One bold decision. One more leap of faith.

In 2014, Paddle Nepal moved into our purpose-built office in the newly completed Lakeside Center—a space that beautifully reflected Nim’s creative vision.

That same year, we opened our very first Kayak Shack on the shores of Phewa Lake and introduced stand-up paddleboarding (SUP)—small steps that would grow into something much bigger than we imagined.

Looking back, this chapter wasn’t simply about a new office. It was about believing in the future.

Twenty years on, we’re still here. Still growing. Still paddling.

In 2014, Nim had the honour of representing Nepal in canoe slalom at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

There was just one problem.

He had never paddled an obstacle slalom course or launched from a competition ramp before.

With no coach and no opportunity to train on one, preparation came down to determination, imagination… and hours spent studying YouTube videos.

Three days before competition, Nim arrived in South Korea, met the boat he would race for the first time, and had just two days to become familiar with completely unfamiliar equipment.

It wasn’t the result that mattered most.

It was saying yes to the opportunity to represent Nepal, despite the odds.

Some journeys aren’t measured by medals. They’re measured by the courage to keep showing up.

Twenty years later, we’re still grateful for every opportunity the rivers have given us.

Throwback Thursday became… Forgetful Friday. 😄

This week, we were a little too busy making new memories with Kailash to spend much time looking back at old ones. That feels like a pretty good reason to be a day late.

Some photographs are simply too good not to share.

This is one of our favourites—Nim surfing a standing wave on the Sun Koshi River during one of Paddle Nepal’s early expeditions. Looking at it brings back great friends, unforgettable rivers, and the adventures that helped shape who we are today.

Before we look back for this week’s Throwback Thursday, we’d like to pause and appreciate a special moment from today.

After bringing Buwa from the village to Pokhara for medical care, Nim has been grateful to spend some quiet time with him on Phewa Lake.

During their paddle, Nim asks how he feels about family being spread across Canada, Norway, Japan and Nepal, and Buwa shares his simple wish—to have everyone together again in Nepal to celebrate Dashain this year.

It’s a gentle reminder that while memories are precious, the moments we’re living today are the ones that become tomorrow’s treasures (tomorrow’s throwbacks!)

Here’s to slowing down, being present, and cherishing time with the people we love.

Long before Jalberi became one of Nepal’s most loved canyoning destinations, it was simply a hidden playground where Nim and his brothers spent their childhood fishing, swimming, cliff jumping, and sliding down the rocks.

Years later, while working as a rafting and kayaking guide in Japan, Nim discovered the sport of canyoning and realized that the waterfalls he had grown up exploring had the potential to become something truly special.

This week’s Throwback Thursday shares the story of how childhood memories, new skills from abroad, and a pioneering vision helped transform a hidden waterfall into a canyoning legacy.
