💙 Meet the Pūkeko 💙

One of the most recognisable birds in Akaroa and the Bays, the pūkeko is hard to miss with its deep blue plumage, bright red bill, and long legs that seem almost too big for its body.

You'll often spot them strutting through wetlands, paddocks, roadside grass, and estuary edges, usually in small family groups. While they might look a little clumsy, pūkeko are surprisingly good runners, strong swimmers, and can even fly when they need to.

Known for their curious personalities and bold behaviour, pūkeko are never shy about making their presence known. Keep an ear out for their distinctive calls as you explore the Peninsula.

Pūkeko are native to New Zealand and play an important role in our wetland ecosystems. They feed on a wide variety of plants, insects, and small animals, making them true opportunists of the bird world.

Next time you're exploring Akaroa and the Bays, keep your eyes peeled for a flash of blue among the grass. Chances are a pūkeko is nearby, busy investigating its surroundings or leading a line of fluffy chicks through the reeds.

MYTH BUSTING AKAROA

MYTH: "There's nothing to do in Akaroa in winter."
TRUTH: Winter might just be Akaroa and the Bays' best kept secret.

While others are hibernating indoors, visitors are discovering crisp blue sky days, dramatic coastal views, and a slower pace that's perfect for exploring. Wander a quiet beach, tackle a scenic walking track, or find a lookout all to yourself.
Warm up beside a crackling fire with a local wine, enjoy a hearty pub meal, or settle in with a hot chocolate and watch the harbour go by. Winter is also a fantastic time for wildlife spotting, with fur seals, Hector's dolphins, and the occasional migrating whale passing through our waters. As the sun sets, the clear winter skies put on a show of their own, making stargazing another reason to stay a little longer.

Fewer crowds. Cosy accommodation. Spectacular scenery. Wildlife encounters. Great food. There's plenty to do in winter. In fact, many locals will tell you it's their favourite season of all.

🦭 Baby Fur Seal Alert in Okains Bay! 🦭
If you're looking for a fun family day out, Okains Bay is full of little adventures right now.

Take a stroll through Victoria Park and keep an eye out for playful baby fur seals resting along the coastline. Remember, these are wild animals, so enjoy the experience from a good distance and give them plenty of space. New Zealand fur seals regularly use Banks Peninsula's rocky shores as resting spots.

Make a day of it by:
✨ Walk the Victoria Park loop and crossing the Millennium Bridge
✨ Visit Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum and discover local history
✨ Build sandcastles, play beach cricket or collect shells
✨ Pack a picnic and a good book and soak up the peaceful bay atmosphere

Okains Bay is one of those special places where wildlife, history, and beach fun all come together in one beautiful spot. Who's adding it to their weekend plans? 🌊🐚🦭

🐋 Did you know? Humpback whales can sometimes be spotted passing Akaroa Heads at this time of year.
These incredible ocean travellers are on one of the longest migrations in the animal world, journeying thousands of kilometres between their feeding grounds in Antarctica and warmer tropical waters where they breed and give birth.

During late autumn and winter, some humpback whales can occasionally be seen moving along our coastline as they head north, making Akaroa and the Bays a pretty special place to keep your eyes on the horizon.

Humpbacks can grow up to 16 metres long and are known for their spectacular breaches, tail slaps, and haunting songs. While sightings are never guaranteed, spotting one passing Akaroa Heads is a truly unforgettable reminder of the wild beauty that surrounds Banks Peninsula.

Next time you’re out walking the coastline or cruising on the harbour take a moment to scan the water. You never know what might be passing by.
Nature’s greatest travellers might just make your day. These photos were taken in the last 2 weeks.

Myth Busting Akaroa
Myth: "it's a sleepy village with nothing happening"
Truth: It’s calm, not empty. There’s a difference. Cafes, harbour cruises, wildlife encounters, art, history, and experiences that don’t shout for attention. Regular live music events, open mic evenings, sporting events, movie marathons, and much more. If you're bored - you're doing it wrong!
