💙 Meet the Pūkeko 💙
One of the most recognisable birds in Akaroa and the Bays, the pūkeko is hard to miss with its deep blue plumage, bright red bill, and long legs that seem almost too big for its body.
You'll often spot them strutting through wetlands, paddocks, roadside grass, and estuary edges, usually in small family groups. While they might look a little clumsy, pūkeko are surprisingly good runners, strong swimmers, and can even fly when they need to.
Known for their curious personalities and bold behaviour, pūkeko are never shy about making their presence known. Keep an ear out for their distinctive calls as you explore the Peninsula.
Pūkeko are native to New Zealand and play an important role in our wetland ecosystems. They feed on a wide variety of plants, insects, and small animals, making them true opportunists of the bird world.
Next time you're exploring Akaroa and the Bays, keep your eyes peeled for a flash of blue among the grass. Chances are a pūkeko is nearby, busy investigating its surroundings or leading a line of fluffy chicks through the reeds.
