Fresh snow on the 3rd of March 2026 on the Rainbow side of Molesworth Station last week. Quite chilly but a wonderful experience for our couple from Auckland, they enjoyed every minute of being in snow.
We picked them up from their camper van in the motor home park just outside of Hanmer Springs.

The Colourful Guardian of Our Forests – The Kererū

New Zealand’s native pigeon, the kererū, is one of the country’s most stunning and important birds. With its shimmering feathers of emerald green, royal purple, and snowy white, and its bright red beak and eyes, it’s a true jewel of Aotearoa’s forests.

Once under threat from deforestation and predators, the kererū is now recovering, thanks to nationwide conservation and predator control efforts. These gentle giants are more than just beautiful – they’re essential to the health of our forests. The kererū is one of the few birds capable of swallowing large native fruits whole, spreading seeds far and wide to regenerate trees like miro, tawa, and karaka.

If you’re lucky enough to spot one swooping heavily through the bush or perching proudly on a branch, take a moment to appreciate this symbol of resilience and life in our native landscape.
