Hot Water Beach is quirky fun… and crowded 🏖️

For about two hours either side of low tide, grab a spade, dig a hole in the sand, and natural hot water bubbles up to make your own hot pool. It's one of New Zealand's quirkiest beach experiences!

The catch? Everyone else knows about it too. 😄

💡 Tips:
✔️ Check the tide times before you go
✔️ Go early morning or at dusk for fewer people
✔️ Hire a spade from the café, or bring your own
✔️ Don't swim here. The rips are strong

It's the question overseas visitors ask me most, and the honest answer is longer than most people want to hear.

New Zealand looks small on a map. It isn't. Winding roads, one-lane bridges and lookouts you have to stop at turn a two-hour drive into an afternoon.

My slow traveller's answer:
✅ 3 weeks for both islands
✅ 2 short domestic flights to do the long hauls
✅ Skip the Cook Strait and gain days for side roads, second mornings and walks you almost skipped

Only have two weeks? Pick one island and go deeper. You'll see less, but remember more.
