Pozdrav / Hello from Zagreb, Croatia 🇭🇷

We are so excited to spend the next two weeks exploring the Balkans with such an awesome group of 4 New Zealanders, 2 Americans, and 2 Singaporeans!

Fun fact: Croatia’s flag is the only one in the world with a checkered design — and they proudly showcase it everywhere! From the stunning tiled roof of St. Mark’s Church here in Zagreb, to the tails of Croatia Airlines planes and the iconic uniforms of their national sports teams, those red-and-white squares are a true symbol of Croatian pride!

With its rich Māori heritage, thriving Deaf community, and stunning views, Auckland is the perfect place to dive into New Zealand’s vibrant Deaf culture.

Here’s what we got up to during our four-day visit:
✅ Took in the views from the iconic SkyTower
✅ Hiked up Mt. Eden, the highest natural point in Auckland and the site of an ancient Māori pā (fortress)
✅ Dropped by to see how they’re using AI to make the world more accessible
✅ Took part in a pōwhiri (Māori welcoming ceremony) and were welcomed into Rūaumoko Marae — the only Deaf Marae in the world
✅ Connected with Deaf students and staff at , New Zealand’s national Deaf education hub
✅ Ended our visit with a lively night at the Auckland Deaf Society!

New Zealand’s Deaf community is proud, connected, and growing — and there’s no better time to experience it for yourself.

In February 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle severely damaged the pathway to the stunning Blue Springs, leaving the walk closed for nearly two years. So you can imagine how thrilled we were to learn it had just reopened—perfectly timed for our ASL students’ visit to New Zealand!

This spring is not only breathtaking but also sacred to the local iwi (tribe), so swimming here is prohibited. The water is so pure it supplies 60–70% of New Zealand’s bottled water, emerging after filtering through underground aquifers for up to 100 years. 💧

How lucky were we to witness them in all their glory on such a beautiful day! 🤩

After five full days in Wellington filled with workshops, presentations, and rich engagement with the local Deaf community, we gave our 10 ASL students a well-deserved mental break in one of New Zealand’s most iconic destinations — Rotorua!

We visited Te Puia and Waiotapu, two incredible geothermal and cultural sites. Both places reflect the strong presence of Māori identity and guardianship of the land, with Te Puia also being home to the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. At each site, students experienced the deep connection between Māori culture, the natural environment, and the values that shape life across Aotearoa.

The visit deepened our group’s appreciation for the Māori worldview — one that sees whenua (land), tangata (people), and wairua (spirit) as deeply interconnected.

A warm welcome to our very first group of adventurers on our South Korea tour, led by the amazing ! 🇰🇷

Our journey began with a visit to the Seoul National School for the Deaf — a cornerstone of Deaf education in Korea. Pictured here is a statue modeled after the Japanese Sign Language sign for “100” — an acknowledgement of the school’s founding during the period of Japanese occupation (1910–1945), when Japanese Sign Language was used in Deaf education. While Korean Sign Language has since developed its own rich identity, the statue serves as a reminder of the complex and layered history of Deaf education in Korea.

Behind it stands a Zelkova tree that’s over 100 years older than the school itself. It has witnessed generations of Deaf students grow, learn, and thrive — a living guardian of Deaf heritage.

We’re so excited to keep exploring Korean culture and connecting with the local Deaf community. Stay tuned for many more sights to come! 🙌

What a wonderful event at the Wellington Deaf club meeting the local Deaf community, exchanging NZSL & ASL, and watching Dr Jody Cripps’ presentation on what “Sign Language Community” means compared to “Deaf Community.”

Shoutout to the Wellington Deaf community for welcoming our 10 ASL students—thanks for the awesome night! 🤟🏼

Welcome to New Zealand, 10 ASL students from the United States! 🇳🇿

What better way to kick off our journey than with a visit to the iconic Beehive—New Zealand’s Parliament! Did you know this is where New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) was officially recognised as one of the country’s two official languages back in 2006?

New Zealand has a rich Deaf and sign language history, and we’re excited to dive into it together over the next 18 days!
