๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ MAJOR CHANGES TO NEW ZEALAND PARENT RESIDENT VISA! ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

Immigration New Zealand has announced a new hybrid selection system for the Parent Resident Visa Category, starting 5 October 2026.

๐Ÿ”น Whatโ€™s changing?

๐Ÿ“Œ 90% of EOIs will be selected based on date order
๐Ÿ“Œ Around 10% of EOIs will be selected through a ballot
๐Ÿ“Œ The annual allocation remains at 2,500 Parent Resident Visas
๐Ÿ“Œ Existing EOIs will automatically transition into the new system โ€” no need to submit a new EOI
๐Ÿ“Œ EOIs will no longer expire after 2 years, provided applicants confirm every 2 years that they want to remain in the pool and keep their information updated
๐Ÿ“Œ No additional fee will be required for this confirmation
๐Ÿ“Œ Existing eligibility requirements for applicants and sponsors remain unchanged

๐Ÿ“… Important dates

โžก๏ธ 11 August 2026: Next Parent Resident Visa selection under the current system

โžก๏ธ 5 October 2026: New hybrid selection model begins

โžก๏ธ 10 November 2026: First selection under the new hybrid model

๐Ÿ’ก What does this mean for families?

The new system is designed to make the Parent Resident Visa selection process fairer and more predictable, while still providing an opportunity for newer EOIs to be selected through the ballot.

However, demand is still expected to be higher than the 2,500 places available each financial year, so some families may continue to face a waiting period.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Want to bring your parents to New Zealand permanently?

Understanding the EOI process, sponsor requirements, income requirements and selection system is important before making your plans.

๐Ÿšจ Immigration Advisor update ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ“ข: More Changes

Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Clarifications

New Zealand Immigration has announced minor technical changes taking effect on 24 August 2026 to clarify SMC rules:

Work Experience Evidence

Applicants under Skilled Work Experience, Trades, and Technician Pathways must provide job descriptions, employment agreements, and tax records.

If overseas tax records are unavailable, a certificate of service from the previous employer is acceptable.

Wage Thresholds & Points

Applicants claiming 6 points strictly from income, qualification, or registration must meet the SMC wage threshold when invited to apply.

Those claiming points for NZ skilled work experience can use a combination of points that best suits them, potentially claiming points for lower-level qualifications.

The "look-back period" for setting the wage threshold differs from the period used for counting skilled work experience.

Check the official website for full details and scenarios.๐Ÿ‘‡

04/08/2026

Resident visa applications submitted on or after 3 August 2026, applicants with hepatitis B or hepatitis C will no longer be automatically assessed as not having an acceptable standard of health.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has removed hepatitis B and hepatitis C from the list of high-cost health conditions used when assessing whether resident visa applicants meet New Zealandโ€™s acceptable standard of health requirements.

The change reflects that it now costs less to treat these conditions. The expected cost of treatment for both conditions is now well below the significant cost threshold of NZD $81,000.

The wording for several conditions on the high-cost health conditions list has been updated to provide greater clarity for applicants and medical assessors. The changes ensure the list remains focused on conditions that are likely to impose significant costs or demands on New Zealandโ€™s health services.

Major psychiatric illness and/or addiction will only be included where significant support is required.
Severe autoimmune disease wording has been updated to recognise a wider range of lower-cost treatment options.

Renal and hepatic disorders wording has been clarified to better reflect the conditions intended to be included on the list.

Applicants will still need to meet New Zealandโ€™s health requirements. However, INZ medical assessors will now consider the individual medical circumstances of each applicant with hepatitis B or C rather than automatically finding they will impose significant costs or demands on New Zealand's health or education services.

INZ has worked closely with the Ministry of Health on the change. Pharmac also supports removing hepatitis B and hepatitis C from the list of high-cost health conditions.
