A heartfelt mihi to the Karuwha and St James Anglican Church whaanau for booking a hikoi with us today to honor the significance of July 12, 1863. Despite the weather, your presence enriched our connection with one another as we walked, listened to the whenua, and shared stories. We are truly grateful.
On this day, following the proclamation issued to our people in Ihumaatao on July 9, 1863, many were forced to retreat across the Mangatawhiri River. As they attempted to cross, a militia led by Major Duke Nixon opened fire, igniting the Waikato Wars, which lasted from 1863 to 1864 and resulted in many casualties. The wars led to the forced removal of many maaori from their lands in the Waikato region, having lasting effects on maaori across Aotearoa.
Commemorative events like today are crucial for recognising the struggles and resilience of maaori throughout history. These gatherings offer opportunities for education, remembrance, and reflection on the impacts of colonisation, as well as the ongoing pursuit of mana motuhake and rangatiratanga.
We invite you to join us on a hikoi soon, so together we can continue to remember and reflect on our shared history.
