A heartfelt mihi to the Karuwha and St James Anglican Church whaanau for booking a hikoi with us today to honor the significance of July 12, 1863. Despite the weather, your presence enriched our connection with one another as we walked, listened to the whenua, and shared stories. We are truly grateful.

On this day, following the proclamation issued to our people in Ihumaatao on July 9, 1863, many were forced to retreat across the Mangatawhiri River. As they attempted to cross, a militia led by Major Duke Nixon opened fire, igniting the Waikato Wars, which lasted from 1863 to 1864 and resulted in many casualties. The wars led to the forced removal of many maaori from their lands in the Waikato region, having lasting effects on maaori across Aotearoa.

Commemorative events like today are crucial for recognising the struggles and resilience of maaori throughout history. These gatherings offer opportunities for education, remembrance, and reflection on the impacts of colonisation, as well as the ongoing pursuit of mana motuhake and rangatiratanga.

We invite you to join us on a hikoi soon, so together we can continue to remember and reflect on our shared history.

Did you know waka used to glide through all the river channels that once flowed across our whenua?

As part of one of our awesome workshops for orienteering he tamariki of Te Ara a Hape had the chance to design, build, and test if it floats! Right in their awa that still flows today!

It was a hands-on, splashy adventure filled with learning, laughter, and a whole lot of creativity.

Ka rawe, tamariki maa

Did you know that Te Ihu o Mataoho Tours not only provides Marae experiences but also supports groups looking to immerse themselves in our culture and histories.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting The Monte Cecilia Housing Trust at Makaurau Marae in Ihumaatao. Over 50 of their staff enjoyed a day filled with Te Ahiwaru histories and workshops. From a traditional hangi to a taiao activity planting native trees, followed by a hiikoi around Ootuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve and Ihumaatao, to workshops making Kupenga and playing kemu maaori - it was a day to remember.

A huge thank you to the Monte Cecilia Housing Group for joining us! We are excited to strengthen our connections and welcome you back in the future.

Ngaa mihi nui

What a whirlwind of a few weeks it’s been at Te Ihu o Mataoho Tours! We want to take a moment to express our gratitude to all the groups who have visited us recently to learn about and celebrate our unique Te Ahiwaru and Ihumaatao histories. We’d like to shine a spotlight on some of the amazing groups we've hosted.

First up are the fantastic Year 8 students from De La Salle College, Auckland. They joined us for a hikoi and participated in a give-back initiative to gain service hours, planting over 240 native rakau and fruit trees to help expand our flourishing kai forest. Thank you for your time, beautiful haka, and energy, boys! We hope to see some of you back here in the future to enjoy the fruits of your labor and the beautiful rakau you planted. 🌱🍃🌳
