One more reason why December is such a wonderful time to visit: it's when New Zealand’s wildlife truly shines. As summer begins, the natural world comes alive — native birds are nesting, and warm coastal waters attract dolphins, seals, and even whales.

🪶Our native forests are alive with birdsong in summer. It’s breeding season, so you’ll often spot tui, fantails (pīwakawaka), kererū and bellbirds flitting through the trees. If you’re lucky, you might even get the chance to meet a cheeky Kea in the Southern Alps.

One of the reasons our guests love our tours is the beautiful private lunches we get to have with locals as we enjoy their warm, kiwi hospitality. Today we wanted to share the love for one of our wonderful suppliers, Di and Ian Mackenzie, who welcome us into their 117-year old country home.

Akaunui Homestead is complemented by over 10 hectares of wonderfully mature gardens. Impressive on a really large scale, the garden offers such diversity that you will return home inspired. We wanted to share some client love we received from our recent season that highlights their experience with Di and Ian.

The connections our Kiwi Guides create with guests on tour are absolutely incredible to hear about. A couple who recently experienced our Kakapo tour with their wonderful Kiwi Guide, Graeme wrote a lovely poem that we were excited to share!
“A lifetime bucket list trip is what we came here for.
Never imagining what was in store.
Beauty beyond our ability to describe…
So much geology, ecology, nature & natural history continually explained by our guide.
Māori culture, kauri woods, glow worms & injured kiwi’s and hawks…
Miles of beautiful beaches, boat cruises, snorkelling, ziplining, paddleboarding, hot springs and also long hikes and walks.
Kiwi Farm, winery lunch, a meal served by Māori hosts, with legends and historic family ties…
North Island volcanoes, craters, hot bubbling mud, rushing blue sulphur rapids, dolphins and seals delighting our eyes!
And just when we thought there couldn’t be much more…
The Akaunui Farm Homestead and Di Mackenzie opened her door!
We learned about farming, cattle, sheep and how the herding dogs are trained…
Got lucky to the sunset at Mt. Cook and to hike the Ho**er Lake Trail in the rain.
Then on to Milford Sound and Fiordland National Park for a jaw dropping, eye popping boat and small plane ride…
The Southern Alps, glaciers, alpine and rain forests along breathtaking winding switch back roads on all sides!
And somehow with all of this …
Graeme made certain we each had time to find more than one perfect gift!
Thousands of kilometres were covered in an amazing 21 days…
With a patient, thoughtful and expert guide who educated and tolerated all 18 of us in OH so many ways!
Lots of good memories and laughs in our hearts and minds we will store.

We’ve just wrapped up our October 2024 – April 2025 touring season, and it's been so lovely reading all the feedback from travellers about their time exploring our slice of paradise. From cruising with dolphins in the Bay of Islands to the misty wonder of Milford Sound’s many waterfalls, soaking in Lake Rotoiti's natural hot pools to alpine walks around majestic Aoraki/Mt Cook, New Zealand truly offers something for everyone.

With the end of the season and autumn chill settling in on this side of the world, it has us thinking about holidays already, and the festive season in particular. With guests coming from all over the world, we always love to hear about your experiences in our country and on our tours. However, we wanted to share one fantastic review that came in from a wonderful guest who lives just across the ditch in Australia. We absolutely love to hear that although she has visited Aoteaora, New Zealand before, nothing came close to her experience on tour.

“I have just finished the 21-day Kakapo tour with MoaTrek led by the best tour guide I have ever encountered. Chris, our guide was outstanding. We extensively covered the North and South Island and experienced so many wonderful cultural activities that Chris showed us and taught us that it literally left you in awe!!!
