Parts of the track and hut facilities received a revamp in 2024, featuring upgraded boardwalks, storyboard installations, a new swing bridge and a beautiful Waharoa (gateway) at the trailhead to welcome walkers as they set off.

The looped 62-kilometre track in Fiordland National Park on the South Island takes about 3 days to complete and is graded moderately challenging. Here

You can check ‘hiking around an active volcano’ from your adventure list ✅

While the volcanoes in Tongariro National Park are still considered 'active', they are resting with steaming vents, creating a dramatic scene alongside the track.

Feeling bold? Walk the alpine crossing in a day, or take up the full northern circuit over three.

Why walk with us?

In the words of an old Maori proverb: "Mauri tū Mauri ora" – "An active soul is a healthy soul". We couldn't agree more.

On our self guided walks, all logistics will be taken care of for you – that includes character filled accommodations, the tricky luggage transfers, most meals, as well as the detailed route mapping.

Crafted to offer active adventurers maximum flexibility, walkers can choose between a professionally guided, pack-free walk, complete with luggage transfers and carefully selected lodge/cabin style accommodation and a self-guided, full-pack carrying trek, with shared accommodation at a Department of Conservation Great Walk or a private hut.

From the secluded bays in the Marlborough Sounds to the snow-capped peaks of Canterbury; the South Island's rugged West Coast to the aptly named Fiordland, we've curated an unrivalled selection of affordable and flexible self-guided walks that are as diverse as Aotearoa itself.
