The New Zealand government has recently unveiled the details of a new uncapped, 6-point system for the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa (SMC). This system set to be implemented from October 2023. The changes offer a simplified and more accessible route to residency for eligible individuals.

Starting from November 2023, the New Zealand government is implementing a new policy that allows a maximum continuous stay of 5 years on an AEWV (Accredited Employer Work Visa) for individuals who cannot demonstrate a pathway to residence.

To be eligible for a further AEWV, individuals will need to spend 12 months outside of New Zealand.

As a result, employers will need to shift their focus from visa renewals to actively supporting workers in attaining residency, as it will no longer be a sustainable long-term strategy.
