Rio Tinto announces plans to close New Zealand aluminium smelter in 2021 - More than 1000 jobs appear set to go in Southland, with Rio Tinto announcing it plans to close the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter next year.

This comes after a strategic review of the business.

Rio Tinto has just announced that it will wind down New Zealand Aluminium Smelters - the Tiwai Point smelter - saying the business is no longer viable.
