Despite being at the crossroads of the well-studied worlds of ancient Egypt and Nubia, the archaeology of the Atbai Desert, the region between the Nubian Nile and the Red Sea, is still in its infancy. *Closing_the_coffin of an ancient Egyptian women in New Zealand*

After hundreds of years, her dead body is no longer on display
On 29 April 2026, a quiet and deeply meaningful moment took place at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. In a gesture of dignity and respect, the museum formally closed the coffin of the ancient Egyptian woman Souser-iret-binet, choosing no longer to display her physical remains.

This decision reflected a shared human value across cultures and beliefs that the dead deserve privacy and reverence. It also followed open and respectful dialogue with the Egyptian community in New Zealand, where the museum listened, engaged, and understanding throughout the process.

The closing ceremony was emotional and unifying, bringing together Māori, Egyptian, and wider New Zealand communities. It was a powerful expression of respect across cultures, faiths, and traditions. The presence of the Egyptian ambassador added further significance to this moment.

As an Egyptian New Zealander, I appreciate and respect Auckland Museum for its thoughtful and compassionate approach. In honoring our ancestor Souser-iret-binet in this way, the museum has set a strong example of respecting humanity and cultural understanding.

The Serapeum of Saqqara
The Serapeum of Saqqara is an underground burial site discovered in 1850 by Auguste Mariette. It consists of long rock-cut tunnels about 17 m below ground, extending nearly 400 m, with side chambers holding massive stone sarcophagi weighing around 70–85 tons each. The complex began in the reign of Amenhotep III, was expanded by Prince Khaemweset, and later enlarged under Psamtik I, with further use in the Ptolemaic era.
The sarcophagi, carved from very hard stones such as granite and basalt, show high precision in cutting and polishing. Although traditionally believed to have housed the sacred Apis bulls, most were found empty; only funerary objects and inscribed stelae were discovered, many now in the Louvre Museum. Questions remain about how the tunnels were excavated, how such huge blocks were transported and positioned in narrow passages, and why most coffins contained no remains. Even an attempt by King Farouk to remove one sarcophagus reportedly failed, highlighting their immense weight and the continuing mystery surrounding the site.

In Egypt’s Siwa Oasis, locals use benches carved from solid salt blocks for natural cooling.
Sourced from nearby salt lakes, the salt stays cooler than concrete or metal in extreme heat.
