Accreditation often only comes up once you’re ready to hire.

Hiring a migrant worker starts with Employer Accreditation, which confirms your business meets Immigration NZ’s requirements. Once this step is in place, the rest of the process becomes clearer and more predictable.

Accreditation sets the foundation for everything that follows under the AEWV system.

Immigration NZ has confirmed that from 1 June 2026, English language requirements for AEWV applications will extend to skill level 3 roles.

For some employers, the biggest impact is likely to be around recruitment timing and workforce planning, particularly where businesses are already working within tight staffing timeframes.

Some applicants may now need additional time to:

• Arrange English testing
• Gather supporting evidence
• Complete visa preparation before lodgement

There are also transitional arrangements in place for some existing AEWV holders.

We’ve broken down what’s changing, who it affects, and the practical implications employers and applicants should be thinking about now.

Immigration NZ has announced that from 1 June 2026, English language requirements will also apply to some AEWV skill level 3 roles.

If you’re planning to apply for an Accredited Employer Work Visa, it’s important to check whether your role is classified as skill level 3 and whether you may now need to provide evidence of your English language ability.

This could include:

• Previous work or study completed in English
• Citizenship from an accepted English-speaking country
• An approved English language test

There are also transitional arrangements in place for some existing AEWV holders.

The good news is that current visas are not being changed retrospectively, and the English requirement for AEWV applications remains lower than many residence visa requirements.

If you’re unsure whether this change affects your application, it’s worth checking early so you have enough time to prepare documents or arrange testing if needed.

If you need help understanding whether these changes apply to you, the VisaAide team is here to help.

Immigration New Zealand has now confirmed further detail around the Skilled Migrant Category changes taking effect from 24 August 2026.

That includes:
• Confirmed red and amber occupation lists
• Clarified pathway and eligibility requirements
• Updated wage setting rules
• Qualification and IQA requirements
• Changes to English test validity
• The future AEWV extension option for eligible migrants

For employers, these changes may affect workforce planning, retention conversations with migrant workers, and which roles may realistically support long term residence pathways moving forward.

For some workers, the updated settings may create clearer long term residence pathways. For others, particularly those in red or amber list occupations, eligibility may become more restricted or require higher thresholds to be met.

We’ve broken down what these changes may mean for both employers and migrants, including how occupation lists, qualifications, wages, and work experience may affect pathway eligibility moving forward.

Australia’s migration system is becoming more selective

Australia’s latest Federal Budget keeps the permanent migration cap at 185,000 places for 2026–27, unchanged for the third year running.

But while the numbers are staying similar, the focus of the system is continuing to shift.

Some of the biggest immigration signals from the Budget include:
• Over 70% of permanent places allocated to skilled migration
• Around 70% of permanent places reserved for people already in Australia
• Only 55,110 places expected to go to offshore applicants, mostly highly skilled migrants
• Skilled migration points test reforms confirmed for the first time since 2012
• Greater focus expected on younger migrants, qualifications, English ability and higher-skilled work
• $85.2 million invested into faster skills assessments
• Push to get more qualified tradies into construction and infrastructure roles faster
• Higher salary thresholds from 1 July 2026 across key visa streams
• Increased funding for student visa compliance and scrutiny
• Working Holiday Maker ballot changes to better manage allocation and numbers

Net overseas migration is forecast to reduce from post-pandemic highs, although it is still expected to remain above pre-COVID levels.

Overall, the Budget does not significantly expand migration numbers. It continues the shift toward:
• onshore over offshore applicants
• higher-skilled, higher-earning migrants
• workers in industries tied to housing and infrastructure needs

If you’re unsure how these changes could affect your situation or future plans, our team is here to help you understand what the updates may mean for you.
