It is probably a timely reminder that what political parties throw around pre-election is not an indication of what will really happen. When Luxon talks about "careful immigration" that could mean anything. Careful is what we have alraedy and being careful could equally mean not cutting off the availability of skilled and non skilled workers to NZ businesses, especially when you want the economy to grow.

It's the latest example of internal coalition friction as New Zealand First continues to rail against the FTA's "ludicrous immigration implications".

The reality with this kind of law change is that it mainly impacts people who don't take the immigration process seriously, which is probably the majority of the people that the Government identify as being problematic, but the problem is that it also catches out the ones who find themselves in a tricky situation through no fault of their own.

Advocates are concerned the government is taking New Zealand down a path to US-style crackdowns on overstayers and asylum seekers.

Generally if you are not involved in the job interview and visa application process at all then it is almost certainly a scam.

🚨Watch out for fake job offers🚨

New Zealand employers cannot charge you fees for a job or make you pay any of their recruitment costs. This includes indirectly through a third party who then demands you pay them.

If you see these signs of a scam, stop and take extra precautions. Ask questions and seek official advice: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/work/protecting-yourself-from-immigration-scams/

Some good news for students or people considering a study pathway as part of the plan to meet residence eligibility. All this still needs to be well managed of course, but expanded eligibility for work visas after study is very helpful in securing the right job for the next stage.

We are introducing a new Short Term Graduate Work Visa and extending Post Study Work Visa eligibility to better align graduate pathways with New Zealand’s skills needs.

This is good to see. The update confirms what we assumed would be the case and overall it shows a much more accomodating system for most people. The main thing that people have been asking about is median wage, so it is positive that INZ have confirmed that the median wage rate at the time of counting work experience will be the rate that can be used at the time of application.

Further changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) have been confirmed today ahead of the changes coming into effect in August 2026.

Clariifcation on working conditions for open work visas. This has always been interesting because the legal interpretation of what was and was not allowed was very vague in some cases. The changes especially clarify that while partners in general can work for themselves and run their own business, they cannot employ people. INZ have always been hesitant to acknowledge that self-employemnt is allowed on an open work visa, so it is good to have a clear interpretation on this.

Yes INZ has confirmed that median wage will increase to $35 hour after March 9. remember this does not affect AEWV applications, but will affect residence applications and various exceptions and dependents.

In general if you are alraedy being paid a previous median wage you may not need to worry about this depending on the visa category you may apply under.

Anyone planning a long term move to NZ would be well advised to have their immigration pathway managed, not just rely on information given once at the start of the process. In NZ, immigration changes often and can change quickly, so the only way to continue to maintain eligibuility for the next visa is to keep up with the changes and adapt to them.

Migrants told their jobs were skilled may find that's no longer be the case.

Be wary of scams if you are dealing with INZ. It really doesn't help that even legitimate immigration officers suddenly call asking for ridiculous things as well though. We have had cases that we were sure it was a scam and it was only because the immigration officer could quote the application number that we agreed to talk to them. 😀

Callers have been impersonating immigration officials and using New Zealand mobile numbers to appear legitimate.
