With the increasing popularity of sauna in New Zealand, we want to start a conversation.
Using proper sauna stones, typically made of hard, igneous rocks like olivine diabase, is crucial for safety and effectiveness. Softer stones, like sandstone, can crack or explode when exposed to the extreme heat of a sauna, posing a risk of injury to sauna-goers. Hard stones can withstand high temperatures, ensuring a safer and more durable sauna experience. Additionally, the proper stones help retain heat efficiently, creating a consistent and enjoyable sauna environment. Finally, stones found in the wilds of New Zealand may contain impurities, that could be released during the sauna.
On the left is a sauna stone, it's a commercial product and has been put through quality control. On the right is a river stone found locally.
If you are not using a genuine sauna stone, found at any of the established New Zealand sauna retailers, please consider doing so. It makes no sense to invest in what is a luxury item to skimp on the stone quality.
