Fly Fish Canterbury with Jeremy Poulter

Fly Fish Canterbury with Jeremy Poulter Fly Fish Canterbury is based out of Christchurch city (population 400,000), on the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

Canterbury is spoilt for choice when it comes to rivers and lakes. Canterbury is made up of 3 regions, South Canterbury (main centre is Timaru), Mid Canterbury (main centre is Ashburton) and North Canterbury (main centre is Christchurch). Canterbury has some large braided rivers that all hold brown trout and several hold rainbow trout also. In January to April these rivers also have a good run of

wild Chinook (also called Quinnat) Salmon. The real fun for trout anglers, starts with the multitude of tributary and feeder streams that tumble down off the Southern Alps.

8wt or 9wt Saltwater floating line.

Big ask here - but does anyone have a 8wt or 9wt floating saltwater fly line I might be able to borrow for a weekend coming up?

I wouldn't normally ask, but it's a one off trip to try and catch a few on saltwater flats. Not sure I can justify $200+ new line for 2 day trip.

Happy to return payment in the way of trout flies or beers etc.

Pickup ideally in CHCH or Auckland or Tauranga

Friendly Reminder for All River Users

As we head into the busy time of year, especially with the fishing season opening soon, it’s a good time to remind everyone about shared use on our rivers.

Jet boaters, anglers, kayakers, rafters, and those on the banks all value the same thing: getting out there and enjoying our rivers. A bit of patience and courtesy goes a long way.

Before launching, please remember:

• Check the uplifting status of the river you plan to boat
• Know and follow navigational rules
• Slow down when passing others
• Give space to people fishing from the banks or in the water
• A friendly wave or quick chat can ease most situations

Tekapo River Users:
Jet boating is only permitted when the flow is above 20 cumecs, as recorded on the ECan flow recorder downstream of Maryburn. Please check conditions before heading out.

We want everyone to enjoy their time on the water without stress or conflict. Let’s look out for each other and keep our rivers a great place to be.

Thanks, team. Stay safe and have a good day out there. 🌿🚤🎣

Stay safe out there!

Opuha Water has decided to utilise tomorrow's predicted rainfall and resulting higher river flows to release an artificial fresh into the Opuha River. This is to remove nuisance didymo present within the river system. Previous investigations have shown that timing an artificial fresh to coincide with naturally higher flows increases their effectiveness in removing nuisance periphyton in the river.

The artificial fresh is scheduled to be released from the Opuha Downstream Weir at approximately 9.30am on Thursday 23 October. This will see river levels rise slightly as it passes downstream and river users are to be vigilant and be aware of fluctuating water levels for 24 hours after this time.

Intentions App: For all the fishermen out there. Would you support and use an intentions app?

Having a chat with a few people recently, what would be your thoughts in developing an intentions app for fishing in NZ?

Initial ideas is it would need to be fully independent of Fish and Game etc, needs to be free to use, needs to be 100% anonymous (ie your details aren't being shared with the next person). You would log your intentions to fish a certain spot or beat, on a certain day. The info you would be provided with is if anyone else had the same intentions to fish that spot, on your given day.

You could then make a much more informed decision if you need to arrive at 6am, or 10am, or if too much registered interest, you might choose to change your intentions and fish elsewhere.

The goal?: allow more independent, anonymous advice around people wanting to fish that spot. Nothing worse than spending $100 on fuel to find someone already there.
