Some journeys aren’t about distance — they’re about history.

On a special road trip to Christchurch, I had the privilege of meeting Jenny Sew Hoy and Ron Sew Hoy, great-grandchildren of Choi Sew Hoy, one of the most significant figures in the Chinese goldfields history of Otago.

We spoke about stories passed down through generations. Ron was brought up on the Nokomai diggings — long known within the Chinese community as “the Nok” — carrying living memory of a way of life that helped shape this region.

Two people. One family. One enduring story of resilience, contribution, and connection to the goldfields.

At Clutha River Cruises, we’re proud to help keep these stories alive along the river where so much of this history unfolded.
