Project Expeditions

Project Expeditions Small group tours for mature travellers escorted from NZ to worldwide destinations. TAANZ Bonded.

Project Expeditions was formed in 1983 to specialise in soft adventure packages for the retired age group, when at the time there was no other company doing so. We are an independent, pioneering company, always looking for exciting new avenues to pursue in the world of travel. Indeed on many occasions we have ‘blazed a trail’ for others to follow. For example we were the world’s first travel compa

ny to obtain tourist permission to land on Komodo Island and observe the dragons. We were the first New Zealand adventure operator into China in 1983 and to Mongolia in 1986. Since that time we have blazed trails through the jungles of Thailand, Borneo (both Malaysian and Indonesian), Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. We have taken groups to the top of Mt Kinabalu, rafted the Zambezi River, snorkeled with the seals in the Galapagos Islands and dived in cages to see the great white sharks off South Africa… all this for travelers over 50! As such, we do not subscribe to the normal concept of escorted travel. Our tours are not for those who are content to be shepherded around in large groups, or simply wish to view tourist sights from the inside of buses. We like our groups to be between 12 and 16 and on some occasions we operate for numbers down to 6. Our policy is to immerse our travellers in the culture, geography and flora & fauna of the countries we visit, spend time with locals and to seek out enriching experiences few others would imagine.

** Mongolia September 2026 is confirmed to depart **

This is one of those journeys that feels quite different to most. Wide open landscapes, very few people, and a pace that gives you time to take it all in.

The Golden Eagle Festival in remote Western Mongolia is a real highlight, but it’s the time spent travelling through Central Mongolia and the Gobi that tends to stay with people.

Domestic flights into Western Mongolia are limited and do sell out - so if you've been sitting on the fence, now is the time to book.

A rather belated Happy New Year! The PE team enjoyed a bit of a hiatus from social media until this week, when our advertising campaign kicked off for Roni's fantastic Norway and Finland Coach & Cruise tour scheduled for Nov-Dec this year.

Roni had rave reviews from her last 'coach & cruise' to Slovenia & Croatia, so how about joining her in Scandinavia? The tour is live on the website (link in the comments), or email us at [email protected] for more details.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be showcasing the experience, so stay tuned!

Well that is a wrap! We have all landed back home (or our next destination for those extending their travels). Our group of 8 (two members left us early in Kochi to head home for a wedding) all enjoyed a relaxing final few days alongside Vembanad Lake at Kumarakom (our accommodation accessible by water). We also spent a day cruising Alleppey's backwaters on a traditional Kettuvallum or rice boat. Bliss! A massive thanks to Madesh our driver and Sanju our driver's helper. Madesh's driving skills were legendary on a route that took us off the beaten track - for a week we saw no other Western tourists and Sanju not only helped on the bus but also joined us on our walk in Chimmony Wildlife Reserve as an extra helping hand.

Till next time! Namaskaram 🙏

We love Kochi! From an auto (tuk tuk) exploration to learn about some over over 30 different communities that call an area of only three square kilometres home, to learning about the ins and outs of the cooperative structure of village industry in the hinterlands we have had so much fun and met some many neat people. We also had some amazing food. Freshly prepared sweets in the Gujurati quarter, toddy (the local h***h) with spicy prawns in the local pub and a stunning local lunch and cooking demo near Chellanam Beach.

Everyone also had plenty of free time in Fort Kochi to do a bit of shopping if they wanted and we all loved buzzing around in the autos getting from a to b.

Next stop is the backwaters.

From ritual to performance art. From Thalaserry we travelled for nearly an hour to a sacred grove to witness Theyyam. Theyyam is not a performance it is a deeply meaningful ritual where man enters a trance like state and becomes a God. We were privileged to have permission to see not only the transformation but also witness the veneration. Leaving the Malabar by train (fantastic new train with Executive Class seats and very clean loos) we journeyed to the cultural heart of Kerala.

Staying in the peaceful village of Ararrupuhza near Thrissur we enjoyed a peaceful cruise on the river and viewed the adornments worn by the elephants in the village's famous temple festival. After some 'forest bathing' in the jungle at nearby Chimmony Reserve we experienced the classical art of Kathakali. Unlike a more tourist oriented show like you get in Kochi, we had a session prior to understand the structure of the storytelling and the story we were to see in an interactive session with some of the artists. We then enjoyed a fantastic one hour performance of the story of Ravana - a demon and one of Kathakali's most popular anti-heroes.
