Howdy folks, well it's been a couple of weeks since losing my vehicle key fob and I thought I reckon I can find it. So up early Saturday and off up near Ohau to the car park. This time I had a speedy secret weapon to get me to the start of the climb, I took a bike. I thought I should be able to get there way quicker and back on the bike.

Parked up, took out bike and I'm off. took just under 1hr to get to the area I had to start climbing, hid the bike and I'm off heading up. No cordless hole punch just the camera. I did spot a few animals and got a few pics, pretty nice day for a wee walkies. Eventually getting to the remains of the Chamois and I searched and searched but no luck. Then headed down to bike, hopped on and I'm off, only to get about 1km and I get a puncher and end up walking the bike out. Had I not got the puncher I think I'd have been back to the vehicle in about 30min instead 1hr. Ending up covering just on 14km for the day.

Never mind, a pretty nice day on the hill and although I didn't find my key, well it's hard to beat just getting 'Out There'. I'm really not have much luck with bikes?

Just thought I'd tell you about using my MSC pack liner a few weeks back.

So a few weeks ago while getting off the mountain very late at night and while waiting for the truck to arrive, I was dripping wet and a very cold breeze was blowing which I could feel my core temperature dropping and I was getting cold. I took my big orange MSC pack liner out (it was very smelly and covered in blood as I do use it as a clean surface to process meat on it(but inside it was clean-ish) and I climbed in pulling it over my head and instantly felt warmer being out of the wind. Waiting twenty minutes for the vehicle to arrive I was pleased to have it and the first time I've used it and it worked well.

As well as a waterproof pack liner, a survival bag, a tent/shelter. It Will keep your pack afloat in water and if all your gear is stored in it inside your pack everything is safe from getting wet.

Mine is folded up flat in the bottom of my pack. It's always there if needed. The bright Orange, form a SAR (Search & Rescue) perspective is pretty stand-out-ish in the middle of a sea of tan tussock or green bush or as that helicopter fly's around looking for you. If your not carrying one I would highly recommend it. (I do also carry a good quality thermal lined survival bag if really needed)

Howdy folks, Here's a lesson for everyone that heads out into the back country. A costly mistake for me.

So, Nick and I are away early off looking for a Chamois. Over the day we cover probably about 25km of varying terrain, from valley floor, through native alpine beech to alpine tussock basins to the top of mountains over moon like rock. At numerous times we stopped to glass or take a break. My key fob (to get into my truck and start it) was inside my zipped up camo jacket pocket (or so I thought). Over the day it got pretty hot with all the climbing and jacket got put in pack. We'd take a break and I'd pull out my jacket to get to some food. Jacket back into pack and then continue.

About 16hrs later, pretty Knackered we get back to truck and no key fob, somewhere it had fallen out of my pocket that I had not zipped up. While chatting to my wife trying to convince her to drive up to me with the spare a local bloke drives by and offers to drive us back to the camping ground, awesome. Then I have to get a spare key to get into our unit at the camping ground, we've got no food so Tony the owner of the Ruatuniwha camping ground gives us some of his food and some milk for breakfast. Just so thankful for the kindness of both Tony a the local for helping.(I did drop off to him some money for fuel the next day) Lake Ruataniwha Holiday Park

Next morning I'm up early, walk the 4km to the main highway, I'm hitching to Cromwell, a young bloke picks me up and drops me off in Omarama then another bloke heading to Queenstown picks me up and drops me at home about 915am, not too bad going. I get my back up fob and drive back in our vehicle, pick up Nick and back to my truck which Nick drives the truck home. LESSON LEARNT. Here's a few random pics.

Howdy folks, our next hunt was getting 'Out There' looking for a chamois, once again they are just not everywhere as some would have you believe. We covered some awesome huge country looking looking looking. To be fair it is like looking for the needle in the haystack. There is just so much land that just goes on and on.

Well as the saying goes 'perseverance pays off' after a massive day on the hill which we probably clocked up around 25kms in just some of the most magnificent scenery, I think even if we had not of got something the views we had that day were just stunning.

Anyway as luck would have it we did eventually spot some chamois and after a pretty sneaky stalk got to within shooting range and once again the single shot R***r No1 did the job. (I might even have to do a post on my awesome No1, I mean who shoots with a No1?) Once again photos taken, headskinned and meat taken and we were off heading down. ( Here's a plug for carrying walking poles, they are the best, in this steep country they offer so much support). We got off the very steep hillside onto the flats as it got too dark to see then about a 4km hike back to the truck under headlight only to find I'd lost the truck key. What a humpty. (Keep tuned in to see how that panned out).

Howdy folks, the next part of our trip was after a bull Tahr. Not as easy as it sounds and especially on public conservation land. It's all very well finding Tahr but finding a bull that is worth while shooting is another issue all on its own.

We were basing ourselves at Lake Ruataniwha Holiday Park, again great facilities amazing staff that really helped us out (more on this story to come, thank you Tony) I could not recommend staying here enough whether fishing the cannels or out hunting you are on the spot and pet friendly.

Anyway the first few days where spent just glassing and glassing, we did spot a number of Tahr but often mature bulls stay hidden until late afternoon then come out to feed or follow the girls and as they feed all night you'll spot them moving back to their sleep up area in the morning. This can work in your favour as if you now know their routine you can plan a stalk, be in position to shoot him and be able to safely get back off the mountain which is usually in the dark by headlight.

And so it goes, yip we spotted a good big mature bull, planned our stalk for the next day and up early started walking. Getting into position, glassing lots but once your up on the hill terrain looks different. 'Are we in the right spot' 'Was it this ridgeline' 'Are we high enough or are we too low' etc.

We spotted another mature bull but he was 500m above us so we moved up and at 5.15pm got onto the mature bull and a well place hit dropped him but as so often happens 100odd kgs started slowly rolling and disappeared into a steep gutter and we eventually found him about 500m below us. In fading light, photos taken and then under headlight head skinning then following the shute we were in all the way back down to the valley floor two hours later. Knackered and dripping wet with sweat a very tough day but Bull Tahr taken.

Howdy folks, basing ourselves firstly in Omarama and using the Omarama TOP 10 Holiday Park as a base was great. Awesome facilities, a dry and warm room (as opposed to the -3 in the tent) toilets/showers/cooking area. And the staff were so helpful and really looked after us when we needed an extra night. Not to mention a couple of bloody good feeds and a few cold ones across the road at the Boots & Jandals Hotel Omarama great service and hospitality. Certainly beats lying in your tent.

Day one, from here it was 'recon' I had a few spots I knew some Tahr were living and maybe even a Chamois so on our first day we covered about 20kms of mostly up, some flat bits once at the top of the hill then a big downhill section getting back to the truck just on dark.

Day two saw us covering similar ground but again nothing that got us excited, overall we spotting 28 red deer and about 35 Tahr but not anything we were looking for.

From here it was time to reposition to our next base. Things start to get exciting for us. Here's a few pics from these two days.

Howdy folks, well, it's been a busy last 10 days. After dropping 'Tasmanian, Nathan' off at the Queenstown airport I had a days rest then picked up Nick all the way from Iowa in the USA. Nick was over here last year looking for a few animals and due to exceptionally dreadful weather (we had two nice days and 8 shockers) things just didn't go to plan for us. Fingers crossed for this trip.

Nick was after a Fallow buck, a bull Tahr a Chamois and perhaps some goat hunting so we were hoping for some better weather than his last visit. The days we did get out last year were a real eyeopener for Nick in the steepness of the terrain, the volume of climbing and distances needed to walk (mostly up). Although Nick was reasonably fit he did say towards the end of the trip it was getting tough. So this trip Nick had been really working on his fitness and endurance well prior to getting here and it was certainly put to the test.

Over the last ten days I think we would have climbed and hiked closed to 80-100km in different areas. All of the hunting is free range, nothing is behind high fence so we had to work bloody hard and cover some huge days on the hill to find, evaluate, stalk in close enough to get a good accurate shot to secure the animal then pack out. Days ranged from 6am to getting back to base at 9pm. I'd imagine most days were in around 15km walks on average. Lets just say Nick handled all the walks without a problem and we did some pretty extreme stuff in some very challenging terrain. I was most impressed.

Over the next wee while I'll add a few of our trips showing some stunning country and some of the animals. First trip was after a fallow buck.

Howdy folks, Well a busy last week getting 'Out There' with Nathan from Tasmania after a nice red deer stag and Chamois. We were pretty lucky with the weather, really nice days although very cold nights and frosty mornings. One morning it was -3 inside the tent.

We covered some amazing country that few but hunters will every get into and see. We only saw one red deer stag that was really worth shooting and after an awesome stalk, closing the distance from about 900m when we first spotted it to within 130m ready for the shot and we had the wind change and he just took off. We watched him run down into the creek then up the other side disappearing behind some rocks over a km away within 5 minutes. It would have taken us a good 1.5hrs to get to where he just went in maybe 5 minutes.

Into another spot looking for a Chamois and again some huge country covered and some big days on the hill. Some pretty steep terrain that was abit challenging for Nathan at times but hats off to him and with some prodding with a sharp knife he handled it well. A spot of luck this time with Nathan securing a nice Chamois buck.

Nathan was a pleasure to take out into the hills and we had some excellent hunting. His positive attitude and wonderful ethics into not shooting just any deer was great to see. Nathan had multiple opportunities to shoot but choose not too even though up until now he had never even see a red deer. He saw his first red deer, heard his first 'roar' but choose not to shoot one just to say 'I shot one'. And we saw over 40 red deer over the week.

Thank you Nathan for coming out with 'Out There Southern Adventures' very much appreciated. Until next time.
