Have you ever wondered what everything is built upon in Venice??

Beneath Venice, historic structures rest on thousands of wooden piles, mostly oak and fir, driven into the lagoon bed.

Although it may seem unusual to build with submerged wood, this engineering method has proven highly effective. The brackish, oxygen-free water prevents the wood from rotting, while constant contact with water helps it harden over time, transforming it into a stone-like material.

This system has allowed Venetian palaces to maintain their stability for over 2,000 years.

Day 4 - Boulder City/Hoover Dam

A cute & clean town 45 mins outside of Vegas sits Boulder City with its historic centre (and the best coffee we’ve had yet!!) a short 20 min drive stands the impressive Hoover Dam spanning 2 states & time zones (Nevada & Arizona). We kayaked down the Colorado River to Emerald Cave trying to spot wildlife 🕷️ 🐍 🐐 🦅 and then stocked up on American Candy at Walmart (my daughters’ main request!! 🍬).

Day 3 - Tonopah - Boulder City 500km

A drive down the ET (Extraterrestrial Highway) today where we left the wide open spaces and arrived at Valley of Fire State Park which was spectacular! Lots of hikes, short walks and amazing views. A day could easily be spent inside this park to see everything.

Day 2 - Death Valley - Tonopah 375km

A day spent driving loooonnnggg straight roads. We stopped off at Badwater Basin - salt flats which is 865m below sea level. Took a few pics at the International Car Forest and had lunch with a few locals in Beatty (population of 596). We had a tour around a silver mine which put Tonopah on the map and then checked into Americas most haunted hotel 😱😱. A ghost tour after dinner was a terrible idea and ended up sharing a bed with one of the other girls without a wink of sleep!!! 👻

Day 1 of our Nevada roadie. I met 2 other lovely travel agents from NZ in Auckland and we hit it off from the get go. A quick 24 winks in Vegas before heading to Red Rock Canyon in the Majove Desert. E bike tour with www.redebike.com/ was a must do followed by the worlds BIGGEST burrito at Mountain Springs Ranch. Spent the night at Tarantula Ranch in Death Valley National Park. No spiders sighted😮‍💨 and mingled with other travellers in the Wine Bar whilst watching the beautiful night sky

I ❤️ to travel but often it doesn’t go to plan. Yes, this is annoying but you’ve just got to roll with it and make the best out of a bad situation. After my flight was delayed 8 hours today, I booked a day room at the Pullman Auckland Airport and enjoyed the luxurious hotel amenities. I’m now feeling relaxed and ready to get on that plane!

Follow me over the next 8 days while I head to Nevada and do a self drive through Death Valley 🏜️ and hopefully win big in Las Vegas 💵.

Visited Hanger 22 today which is Air NZs product design studio hidden away in a small Auckland lane way. We got to sample the new aircraft product which will hopefully be here 2025/26. The sky nest is going to be a sell out and a great alternative the Sky Couch

Want to take the family on the CHEAPEST holiday this school holidays???? What about China?!? 🇨🇳 $2460 for flights ex Auckland for a family of 4 return!!!!! ($695 per adult $535 per child)

How’s this for an itinerary??? Soak up the culture of ancient China in Beijing, get the kids active walking the Great Wall and perhaps sample some of the local street food on Wangfujing Street famous for 🕷️ 🦂 🐜. Bullet train 🚄 down to Shanghai and you’ll be amongst glitz and glamour, shopping galore and easy day trips out to local water towns. Top this amazing trip off with a day at Disneyland and you will have had the cheapest family holiday immersed in Culture for a snippet of what it would cost to get to Fiji or Raro!!
