The days may be shorter and the air sharper, but the wildlife of the Otago Peninsula doesn’t pause for winter. Hoiho, Pākake, and Kekeno pups continue their routines — and if you’re brave enough to face the cold, we’re right there with you, watching it all unfold.

We often get asked about the “mermaid hair” swishing at the edges of the Kekeno rookery and we love the curiosity it sparks. Southern bull kelp is one of the quiet heroes of our coastline, creating rich underwater habitats and continuing to nourish the shore long after it lands on the sand. It’s a beautiful reminder that even the simplest things we find on a walk can tell big stories about the health of our marine ecosystems.

As we mark King’s Birthday, we can’t help but think of the kings who reign here year‑round, Whakahao, our male New Zealand Sea Lions. We hope you enjoy the public holiday with your whānau, and with the incredible wildlife that shares this coastline with us.

World Sea Lion Day reminds us just how lucky we are to share our coastline with Pākake, one of the world’s rarest sea lions, and a true taonga of the Otago Peninsula. There is never a dull moment sharing our beaches with these characters. We’re proud to support the New Zealand Sea Lion Trust and the incredible mahi they lead to protect these animals and their future. Today, we celebrate the species, the people who care for them, and the privilege of watching Pākake thrive on our shores.

Dax and the team are grateful to City Sanctuary for gifting us 30, DOC200 traps to expand our trap network across Cape Saunders farm and Papanui beach. Effective predator control is essential for the survival of Hoiho, Yellow Eyed Penguins, who are vulnerable to introduced mammals such as rodents, mustelids and felines. Every trap helps give our taonga species a better chance to thrive on our coastline.

Thank you City Sanctuary!!

Hoiho aren’t just ocean experts, they’re also keen inland explorers. Instead of nesting in open coastal colonies, they seek out sheltered forest spaces, sometimes a kilometre from the shore. Catching a glimpse of their quiet journeys is one of those rare moments that stays with you for a lifetime.

By May New Zealand fur seal pups, Kekeno, are full of confidence. At around five to six months old, they’re busy practicing their swimming, testing their balance on the rocks, and learning how to navigate life while the adults are foraging out at sea. It’s a wonderful stage to watch, full of curiosity and character.

World Biodiversity Day was created to highlight the importance of safeguarding the natural world, and the Otago Peninsula is a wonderful example of why this is so important. Its biodiversity stretches far beyond the wildlife we’re best known for — from coastal plants and hidden invertebrates to birds, reptiles, and marine mammals, each playing a role in maintaining the health of this landscape.

There’s a special kind of joy in watching New Zealand sea lion pups, Pākake, discover their world. Pākake pups can turn even the quietest inlet into a playground. They bring a wonderful energy to the peninsula inlets and remind us how full of character our wildlife is.
