A short lesson in Greek Mythology !
🇬🇷 the beginning of the alphabet
🇬🇷 The beginning of Greek Mythology
In The beginning it was female who was worshipped-Mother Earth Gaia - (Geo ) depicted as a voluptuous woman with a large belly - bearer of offspring
mistress of nature - a goddess
According to the Greek mythology everything started in our universe with Uranus ( we think of the planet ) but in this case it’s Urano the primordial god of the sky and the husband of Gaia.( pronounced Geo )
This is where the words ( the beginning of the alphabet of the eighth century BC ) geometry geology geography were formed is all about the Earth,
Gaia and Urano conceived the earth
They had many children, including the twelve Titans, the one-eyed Cyclopes, and the hundred-handed Hecatoncheires.
Uranus hated and feared his monstrous offspring, forcing them back deep inside Gaia's body causing her great pain
She turns to her offspring to assist her though afraid of mighty (Uranus father of the sky ) , one of the offspring Cronus (Cronus means the concept of time: the beginning of the word’s chronological, chronology , Chronicle and chronic )
castrated his fathers ge****ls whilst he slept and threw them into the sea ( I know right! how dramatic! )
The white foam churned from there created Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.
These children of Gaia became the Greek Gods mythology
Part 2:
Rhea was married to her brother Cronus, the ruler of the Titans.
Cronus ( grandfather to Apollo ) would swallow his own male children to prevent them from overthrowing him.
Distressed that Cronus swallowed each of their children at birth, Rhea sought help from her parents, Gaia and Uranus, to form a secret plan.
When she gave birth to Zeus in Crete, Rhea hid the baby in a cave and handed Cronus a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes instead.
Cronus immediately swallowed the stone, completely unaware that his youngest son had survived to eventually overthrow him.
After growing to adulthood in secret on Crete, Zeus sought the help of Metis, a wise Oceanid nymph who would become his first wife.
The secret plan : Metis prepared a special emetic—a mixture of wine and mustard or a magical herb—designed to cause intense vomiting.
Disguised as a servant or cupbearer, Zeus successfully slipped the poison into Cronus's drink during a feast.
This released his siblings as they were regurgitated
The five gods regurgitated by Cronus were :
Hestia, GODDESS of hearth and home
Demeter, GODDESS of agriculture and fertility
Hera, GODDESSES of women and family /marriage
Hades, GOD of the underworld
Poseidon GOD of the sea and earthquakes
Part 3:Delphi :
Zeus’s legend: According to the famous myth, Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the earth to find the world's center, and their flight paths crossed directly over Delphi.
Delphi means the centre of the earth ( the centre of the Greek earth back then was bordering Turkey , Italy and the greater region of Greece )
This became the established Grecian history
Delphi became the place of divination( basically fortune telling and prophecy)
And he became the first Oracle of the world
In the temple of Delphi pilgrims came and offered many treasures - to ask questions some of them deemed silly , some of them impacting
A female named Pythera was the guiding prophet with divinations of ambiguous answers
So never the oracle would be blamed for an incorrect answer
It was the pilgrim who failed to understand the answer of the prophecy proved incorrect
( hedging the bet I guess you could say)
For example, a soldier might ask “ will I return from the war” ?
And the answer may come, you will go( full stop ) you will return (full stop )
Not in the war
Meaning you will go, you will come back you will not die however. … if it was misinterpreted ( and you move the. To read differently ) it could read you will go. You will return not. … that is all about interpretation.! ..and that was up to the pilgrims to interpret correctly so that the divination was never blamed.
The Oracle was never blamed for incorrect information.
It was this way for 1200 years
Into the 4th century AD when Christianity spread and Oracle collapsed (basically fortune telling was replaced with religion)
Today we entered the site of ancient Delphi:
Here lies the original stone :
Umbilicus : the word we know today is umbilical cord comes from the naval - the centre of a human being - the ancient Greeks called it omphalos, which also meant a central k**b or navel stone.
Where statues once stood ruins remain
The Christians could not entertain GODs they concentrated on religion. They smashed statues and use the stones to build other structures.
Museums today are full of what ancient civilisations would consider castaway rubbish items . No longer required in ancient times.
Modern day excavation uncovered ancient history and beliefs
Writings in stone that told fantastic stories of ancient civilisations.
Statues of importance covered so deep to preserve what we now find fascinating
Greece isn’t just about the islands of Santorini and Mykonos.
It is about the ancient civilisations that have carved out the world as we now know today
the alphabet
the planets
the fascinating stories and words we use daily that we look back in time that have shaped our modern world !
Greek civilisation after Egypt can rightfully be said one of the civilisations at the pinnacle of beginning of our now modern world
Fast falling in love with Greek mythology - explains so much of our modern world terminology!
