In case you missed it... Dunedin had some special visitors yesterday - tohorā!

They used a more traditional route, via the harbour, not the new international flights at Dunedin Airport.

It was difficult to tell who was having more of a whale of a time — the whales, or the tourists on board an Otago Harbour wildlife cruise. Monarch...

Tohorā! We've just enjoyed a visit from several Southern Right Whales (possibly 6 adults) inside the Otago Harbour. Excitement levels are at 11/10.

The group was very relaxed, coming very close to the boat (with engines off) and treated us to pectoral fin displays and vocalisations! As you can imagine, our team are feeling blessed and honoured to witness the occasion.

We are celebrating 40 YEARS of Monarch!

Since 1985, Monarch Wildlife Cruises and The Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance - The OPERA have been showing our guests the special animals that are found in this special part of the world.

We'd like to thank everyone who has been a part of the journey! It's amazing to hear the generational stories of people who first came aboard as children, and now are bringing their children or grandchildren. We love getting people closer to nature.

Winter deals are live on our website. Use the code: 40years

We are proud to announce that Tahu Mackenzie is bringing her more than 20 years of experiential education leadership to The Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance - The OPERA, Monarch Wildlife Cruises, and The Otago Shore & Land Trust where she will serve as Head of Education for the two sister companies and supporting charitable trust. Her most previous role has been the Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom education officer at Orokonui Ecosanctuary for the past 18 years.

Tahu spent her early childhood growing up in Broad Bay and is excited to be returning to her roots by focusing her passion for education and the love of all things natural on the Otago Peninsula. She started her environmental education journey with underwater wonders at the New Zealand Marine Studies Study Centre and Aquarium in 2004 and moved to celebrate endangered forest wildlife at Orokonui in 2008. Through the years her experiential education excellence has been celebrated in her being recognized as Educator of the Year, Otago Person of the Year, and New Zealanders of the Year Kiwibank Local Hero, as well as numerous other awards and accolades.

In her new role, Tahu will help develop, fund, and implement education programmes that allow children of all ages to experience nature in its natural habitat on both land and sea. Her focus will help us develop new offerings focused on the education sector and bring to life a goal of ensuring every school-aged child in Dunedin (and beyond) can personally experience nature. She will also help manage research undertaken at The OPERA.

Our team are proud to provide all of our guests with access to nature and wildlife. Thank you Maadi for coming out with us!

Yes, we have ramps available for wheelchairs. If you or someone you know has special requirements, please get in touch. Let's discuss the options. We want everyone to experience the wonders of our harbour.

At first, Maadi Van Delden felt a little forgotten and left out. All her Andersons Bay School classmates were going on a field trip to Quarantine...

BREAKING: The hoiho yellow-eyed penguin has come from behind to snag the top perch for for a 2nd time! The hoiho won last in 2019 and joins the kākāpō in being the only birds to win twice.

Unlike last year this year's race was a lot closer with just under 1000 votes (and not like half a million) between the hoiho and the runner up, the karure black robin. Congrats to Tūhura Otago Museum for assembling an outstanding campaign team from across Dunedin.

A huge thanks to all of you who campaigned and voted for your favourite birds, and also all of you who chipped in to support Forest & Bird.
