Southern Elephant Seals 🦭

We have been lucky enough to have seen a couple of different elephant seals chilling on our Dunedin shores this summer. Most likely having travelled far from subantarctic islands.

When these guys aren’t practising their fighting skills with sticks or kelp, you’ll find them swimming in the water or lounging on the beach around the Otago Peninsula.

⚖️They are the biggest seals in the world, weighing up to 4,000 kg!
🤿Elephant seals are known as ‘extreme divers’ and can dive down to 2000m or more, staying underwater for up to 2 hours!

These shots and vids were taken by our local guides and skippers who were lucky enough to encounter them on our tours.

It is always a treat when cetaceans decide to join us on our wildlife cruises. It is especially special when we get to see Hector's Dolphin feeding in the harbour or a pod riding the bow wave of the Monarch.

Did you know that Hector’s Dolphins and Māui Dolphins are two distinct populations that speciated 15,000 years ago in the last glacial maximum when the Cook Straight froze over.

Karetai hurukoko, Cape Petrels are a familiar sight around our waters.

During the breeding season (November–February), they’re found throughout coastal New Zealand—especially from Cook Strait south and out to the Chatham Islands. After breeding, they remain in our waters, joined by birds arriving from Antarctica and the subantarctic.

Karetai hurukoko are one of the many incredible seabirds you can spot on our wildlife cruises.

Playful, powerful, and perfectly at home in southern waters.

Dusky dolphins visit Otago’s coastal waters throughout the year, drawn by the abundant food that makes these waters a key stop along their journey.

There’s nothing quite like seeing these ocean acrobats from the water, a true highlight of any Monarch wildlife cruise.
