"Glacier freeze ❄️⛏️🏔️ Once I learned riding a chopper up to a glacier hike was an option on the south island, there was no going back 🚁

With more dramatic scenery than neighbouring fox glacier, Franz Josef is full of crevasses, ice caves, and slippery slopes you’ll traverse wearing crampons while exploring this natural wonder for 2.5 hours with 🧊

Sipping on fresh glacier water was my favourite part whilst our trusty guide cleared the way with a pickaxe, making this undoubtedly the coolest adventure I embarked on during my time in New Zealand 🥾"

High up on the ice where most people only pass through, a few call it home.
The clever alpine kea are often the first to greet visitors on the glacier - curious, bold, and entirely unbothered by the cold.

They’ve adapted to life in extreme conditions most birds wouldn’t survive, turning the frozen landscape into their playground.
