Franz Josef; fast and fabulous!

Did you know? Franz Josef is not your average glacier. It moves faster than most at around 50cm per day - although it has been recorded at moving up to four meters per day at times. It's this speed that creates the spectacular features you get to explore on our world-famous Heli Hike.

After a couple of weeks with no bridge over the Waiho River we locals are VERY happy to have a new one open and operating! When the bridge washed away in a storm on 26th March, access to Franz Josef township from the south was cut off. In just 18 days NZTA managed to rebuild the bridge and get traffic flowing again and we are delighted to be able to welcome visitors from the south once again.

A Way Back Wednesday fact to make you feel young... Franz Josef Glacier is estimated to be 7,000 years old. If you think that's pretty long in the tooth, consider the buried alpine glacier ice scientists have uncovered in Antarctica that's estimated to be 8 million years old...!
